fluids, fluids, fluids... get some pedialyte to stay hyrdrated.

Hi
My son got a stomach virus when he was 11 months ( 7 months adj) and the PP is right all you can really do is keep them hydrated. My son got what was a 48 hr bug for me and my husband but he vomited for 2 1/2 weeks. We were told to give him pedialyte only until it subsided we did everything we could but he did dehydrate but not as bad as it would have been without the pedialyte. He was in the hospital for a day to get fluids and came home on zofran to keep him from vomitting everything. If he starts showing any signs of dehydration I would go the Dr or ER.
Any of these signs could indicate that your baby is dehydrated or is becoming dehydrated:
• More than six hours without a wet diaper
• Urine that looks darker in his diaper and smells stronger than usual
• Lethargy
• A dry, parched mouth and lips
• No tears while crying

Signs that your baby may be seriously dehydrated: • Sunken eyes
• Hands and feet that feel cold and look splotchy
• Excessive sleepiness or fussiness
• Sunken fontanels (the soft spots on your baby's head)

We had the stomach flu for the first time at 1 year and it was very hard to keep Gracie hydrated. She hated every form of pedialyte so we also tried gatorade. We kept going with the formula as much as she would take as well as little sips of water from a spoon. Our doctor reccomended giving smaller amounts, more often as well.

One thing I did try that I am not sure helped or not was using Smart Water which has electrolites in it to make her bottles. It was the best thing I could come up with since she wouldn't take the others.

Hope everyone is feeling better soon - if you think you see any signs of dehydration - call the doctor right away so that they can step in earlier rather than later.

My boys were five months old the first time they got the stomach flu. It lasted two weeks. I was grateful to have cloth diapers which held all the diarrhea well! I never switched them to pedialyte because they were styaing well hydrated and did not throw up after every feeding (told to do this by their doctor). However, if you are concerned with dehydration your best option is breast milk. The next gentlest thing is pedialyte. Another time my boys had the stomach flu (I also had it, but only for 24 hours and them for two weeks) Timothy was getting dehydrated. Instead of going to the ER I gave him an ounce of pedialyte or breast milk every half hour. He quickly went from no tears or saliva back to drooling all over the place! I didn't take him to the ER because I knew the wait at that time was 24 hours and he was better off at home unless he got so bad that they would see him immediately. Just keep pushing fluids. Small, frequent amounts are best if worried about dehydration.

I agree with the others- keep hydrated. We even resorted to giving about 1 cc of water/pedialyte every few minutes using a medicine syringe. That worked pretty well.
