SMILING

When did your premies start smiling? I have a 31 weeker. She is 6 weeks adjusted and 15 weeks actual age. She has only smiled a couple of times and want to know when everybodys babies really started to smile.

According to the March of Dimes developmental milestone guidelines, most babies begin social smiling at the end of 3 months. See: http://www.marchofdimes.com/pnhec/298_10203.asp

Here's the link to the CDC's 3-month Milestones guidelines...

These are just guidelines, of course. And, they are based on typical children, not preemies, meaning that you should adjust your baby's age before looking at them. Keep in mind that many preemies are a bit behind even their age adjustments, especially if they've had rough starts from what I understand.

My son would smile in the NICU, but the nurse explained that it was just a reflex. Around 2.5 months age adjusted, he started social smiling, which was and is very cute.

Megan also started smiling around 2 1/2 months adjusted, 5 1/2 months actual. I can tell lin pictures that she wasn't really social smiling at Thanksgiving, but was definitely social smiling by Christmas. She was born on the 4th of July.
