RSV-Colds?

0 Recommendations

I work in a daycare and everytime the kids get something I get it. I have a very bad cold right now and I fear my baby could get it too. Her ped. said that I could carry RSV and give it to her, I don't know if she meant I could have catch RSV or carry it on my clothes. I always change my clothes and take a shower as soon as I get home.
Can adults catch RSV? I always fear that what seems to be a cold could be RSV.
Also she is getting the shot next week and I'm a little scare about the side effects. Have your babies had the RSV shot? How did they do?
My little one is 4 moths old- one month adjusted age.

I've been taking oregano and echinacia to try to avoid getting sick. Have you tried anything to help with this?
I get so many colds every year that I fear that more that H1N1.

Pneumonia Tylenol Common cold

Working in a daycare w/ a preemie at home must be tough! I would probably be worried all the time too!

Sorry to say, but yes, what appears to be a common cold to you could be RSV. In fact, most people have gotten RSV and don't know it b/c it doesn't progess into anything more than a cold for most people. Not sure about carrying it home on your clothes... I would think that would be possible, so I would definitely change when you get home!

My son got Synagis last season... October through March, and never had any reactions. We always gave Tylenol just in case.

Someone had posted a discussion w/ precautions to take to avoid getting sick... I believe it might have been SUPERMOM... things like gurgling in salt water/peroxide and also swabbing your nose w/ q-tips.

Good luck!!!

Hi - Henrysmom was referring to the post I recently had about how to stay healthy!
http://www.inspire.com/groups/preemie/discussion/staying-healthy-during-flu -season/

My kids contracted RSV during non-RSV season at a daycare in less than 24 hours. My pediatrcian said that daycares and daycare workers just carry all over them! So yes, change your clothes, wash hands all the time, and you can minimize your risk. RSV is a basic cold to us, but awful to a preemie. The synagis shot is very helpful, but they can still get RSV (it's not a vaccine) but if they get it, it will be not as bad. Good luck!!!

I agree with the gals above.

You can carry it home, even on your clothes and pass to your little one. Be sure that you change and wash all the way to your elbows (if you can't shower) before interacting with your baby. RSV in an adult and many other kids may not show up in a severe way, but it can be TERRIBLE for your preemie. Mine caught it (RSV turned to pneumonia) about 15 1/2 months and it was not good! Hospital, oxygen, breathing treatments, IVs, etc. We had no real issues with the RSV shot. I think the shot is great. My girls had just been denied for the shot (2nd season of the shots) when they caught it. Wonder if the insurance rethought that decision after having to pay for all the bills for my girls?? One of the huge things about trying to avoid picking up what the kids have is not touching your face. That is a big thing...if I am out somewhere...I do not touch my face. I think mygirlsmom's posting mentioned this, too...great advise!!! I worked in a daycare awhile back and I was sick all of the time. It is tough when kids are coughing in your face:) Take care of yourself, get sleep, eat right, take vitamins and vit C. All you can do is your best:) GOOD LUCK!!!
Oh and if you are sick and still have to care for your daughter...I always wear a mask and keep my hands CLEAN-CLEAN-CLEAN. Masking wearing has been debated on this site and I have never researched it, but I have worn them, while sick and managed not to pass it to my girls. So, I bought another box this year:) I will try anything to keep them safe:) Good luck!!

I was so glad when my preemie of 35 weeks got out of the hospital. At first they sat me down and said...your child has rsv...I said well how did that happen..knowing that it is only passed on through droplets and poor cleaning habits..they went on to say well when one baby gets it here in the nicu..usually all the babies end up getting it. Needless to say I gave them a verbal beat down, and then calmed down. aftwards they said oopsy she doesnt have it...after putting her in a section with the sick kids! as if...they run everything twice and the 2nd time it came back negative.
