Preemies and Dogs

0 Recommendations

We are looking for a new place to live. We saw a condo recently that we really liked. The only thing is that there has been a family living with a dog for a year. I am not sure if this is harmful or not for my daughter. Like if the dog peed or pood on the carpet, does that contain harmful bacteria? They will steam clean the carpet and clean everything else too. I never had a pet before because my parents never liked them, so I might be a bit biased!!!

Having pets isn't harmful to kids unless the kid has really severe allergies or some kind of disorder. Actually, kids who are around pets tend to have stronger immune systems than those who are kept away from pets.

If you find stains on the carpet, then I recommend negotiating with the sellers to have the carpet replaced (but that's more for aesthetic purposes than anything else).

It should not be a problem at all.
Most of the health professionals will tell you that if a child is exposed to some pet dander/hair early it can help prevent allergies later. Steam cleaning the carpets/floors and thuroughly washing everything will get rid of anything you need to worry about.

Should be fine. Dogs are better than cats...in many ways, I think ;)...but from an allergy perspective, kids are less likely to have problems with dogs than cats.

(Can you tell I'm a dog person?)

I agree... shouldn't be a problem. Steam cleaning the carpet would get rid of any bacteria from pet messes. I agree w/ katek, you could always negotiate getting the carpets replaced. I grew up w/ a ton of pets and we never had any problems. We also have 2 dogs that stay in the house w/ us. My kids love them!

We were scared at first to bring our teeny tiny 23 weeker home to our big, loveable, hairy golden retriever. Our Dr. assured us, however, that unless there was a family history of allergies to pets, our son would be perfectly fine.

I am sure that if they clean out the apartment (professional cleaning of the carpets), your preemie should do just fine!

It will be absoutley fine . We have two doggies and our little girl always was playing with them and she did fine. My personal opion when it comes to preemies that carpet is not good we were told that by the NICU staff. I would look into replacing going to tile or wood floor. Our whole house is wood floor besides the guests room on the other side of the house but getting to those as well.

Thanks guys! I was not too worried about it either. The realtor told us he will do a deep cleaning on the whole unit. It was more my family who was concerned. I guess we could ask them if they could replace the carpet, doesn't hurt to ask :)
