Poo blues..Laxitives.

So C is on laxatives because of constipation. He is on lactulose. Here is the issue...getting the dose right. If I use too much he explodes and if I use too little he has peanut butter poo. How can I get the dose right? If not that get something to help with poo leaks? He wears a size 3 and he is too skinny for a size 4.

MiraLax Probiotics Constipation Pain Lactulose

We have the same trouble with lactulose. I don't have any advice. Just commiserating. Huggies snugglers have a little pouch in the back they claim is for "up the back messes" but I don't know if they come in size 3. They might only go to 2. We had 2 giant messes yesterday so I know where you are coming from!

One of my twins has fought constipation all along even though he and his sister eat the same things and her poop is generally very soft, and sometimes even runny. The problem for him was that his constipation would aggravate his reflux, cause him to lose his appetite, and make him very fussy and crabby around the clock. He would even wake up feeling abdominal pain every hour or two throughout the night.

We had lactulose (also prescribed as enulose), and all I can say is that finding the "just right" dose is a little bit trial and error. We also modified his diet in combination with the lactulose and that seemed to help.

*2 to 4 ounces of prune juice, pear juice or apricot juice per day.

*oat cereal (instead of rice cereal), and then oatmeal when he could handle the texture

*baked sweet potato (not the pre-packaged stuff but just a sweet potato baked in the oven like a regular baked potato or in the microwave at HALF / 50 % power for 20 minutes). Baked sweet potato almost always works for us.

*greens -- peas, green beans, chopped spinach/collards. (We avoided cooked carrots because I had read at a couple of web sites that cooked carrots are actually binding. Who knew?)

*refried beans, and then whole beans (in mild chili) when he could handle the texture

*probiotic yogurt (some parents swear by the probiotic supplements, which contain more than the yogurts, but if you decide to use probiotics in combination with lactulose, then I'd probably start with something a little gentler/weaker)

*I've also heard good things about digestive enzymes and also Miralax, but I don't think I would use them while still using lactulose (aka enulose).

Hope some of this helps.

I just had to comment about your title!!! Too funny!!!!

Josh had *hideous* constipation, but our doc didn't put him on laxitives... I must have a zillion posts on here from that time, asking for advice...

Could you try old-fashioned "training pants" (over the diapers, for added protection)?

Best wishes!!!

I could it goes out the leg holes and not really up the back unless he is sitting. Thats what I was thinking I have tons of little dude undies that I can use. they are toddler size. I may give that a try. My friend was in the hospital due to some PTL and when we moved baby he left a gift. Thanks

I used just the Miralax with the boys, but they were a bit bigger when we started. The ped calculated the amount based on weight and we used that amount. She told us to work on weaning the boys down. As it was mostly for N who suffered worse with constipation, I did the full dose daily for him at first where I could do an every other day dose for L. Eventually we got them weaned off and N decided that he loves the Sweet Ones prunes. At 4 years old, he will tell me if it is a little bit hard to go potty and will ask for prunes. He really loves the things! He even has his 2 year old sister eating them...now if we could get his brother to eat them. I will still need to occassionally provide L with Miralax, but not as often as we used to have to. Don't know if using Miralax would be something that would work for your LO. Maybe ask your ped...

We just got prescibed this and it has worked wonders...She does have runny poos, but any pp is good for my constipation champ :)

Sorry, I know its not funny....but I am working on the right does as well....I am just weaning back 1/8 teaspoon at a time...the does was one tsp to 1.5 tsp a day...seems she needs 3/4 tsp and that took 6 days to figure out. But she now has some clean plumbing.

She is also on probiotics.

Miralax didn't work. Please compute this. C weighs 20.1 +/-. Dr prescribed 12 ml twice a day of lactulose. I give him 10 he has messes. I give 7 he gets backed up.
