Placenta Previa

0 Recommendations

At 20 weeks I was diagnosed with a complete placenta previa. This is my first pregnancy, and after reading all the possible scenarios online and through my nursing/maternity books, I have to admit, I'm scared of the possible outcomes. So far no spotting, but if it doesn't improve I guess that bleeding will eventually happen. My midwife put me on strict pelvic rest precautions. I asked if I should switch to a MD at this point, however they recommended waiting and following up with a 28 week ultrasound (7 nervous weeks to go) before I change my provider. Anyone else going through this right now? Any good suggestions or words of advise?

Eclampsia High risk pregnancy Pregnancy

Hi. I had complete placenta previa last year with my third child (didn't happen with the first 2 pregnancies). It was detected at my 20 week scan and my bleeding began at 30 weeks. Your health professionals are aware of your condition, so you will be closely monitored and that's great. My son was delivered at 34 weeks by c section as I had quite a few bleeds and in the end the decision was made to deliver him early (they do try to keep them in you as long as poss!) I promise you it was not as scary as it sounds and we are both very well. I wish you luck and if you have anymore detailed questions, just ask. (I am going away tomorrow so may not reply for a week or so xx)

Thanks for sharing Hay. I'm glad you and the 3rd baby are doing well! It's nice to hear a good story/outcome.

Jenann13-
I have not had your condition, but I did have Pre-Eclampsia onset very rapidly. My suggestion is that since you now know you are at a higher risk for premature delivery, and possible complications, get a good high risk OB on board now. You may still be able to use the services of the midwife, but a good OB will be able to closely monitor your situation and evaluate all of the risks from week to week. Many moms on here that have had thousands of different traumatic pregnancies recommend forming a good relationship with a high risk OB/Perinatoligist. Best of wishes to you.

Welcome Jenann13! I did not have placenta previa, but since my placenta was low lying, they checked it via ultrasound at 30 wks. That's when they discovered that Henry was severely growth restricted and measuring 5 wks behind. He was born 1wk later at 31wks after I developed pre-eclampsia and there was poor blood flow through the cord. We did have a placental abruption during delivery. I agree w/ mygirlsmom - find a good high risk OB now and get them involved in your care. I hope that things go smoothly for you, but I would rather have a high risk OB look at me sooner rather than later! Good luck!

Thanks for the well wishes. I agree with getting an OB, and that was actually my gut feeling right away. It took the midwife department 4 days after my ultrasound to let me know about the results, and tell me about pelvic rest. I am just happy to be doing good so far. We will have to take it week by week! Thanks again for all the advice!

Sorry to hear about your delima. I had partial placenta previa. All you can do is lots of bed pelvic rest. Take it real easy don't do anything that could cause you or baby harm or make you start bleeding.
not to scare you but my baby ended up 5 weeks growth restricted. She stopped growing at 24 weeks I had her at 29 weeks due to her not getting enough nutrition and I also ended up with preeclamsia.
I don't know why the docs always make us wait so long to have another ultra sound done but if it would make you feel more at ease call your doc and see if you can get an ultra sound done much sooner. Also I highly suggest you make the ultra sound tech measure your baby for growth restriction. Had I known to have them do this I would have found out alot sooner that my baby was not growing. again this is not meant to scare you only to heighten your awareness. Let us know how it all goes.
Best of luck, your in my prayers.

It's going to be challenging to take it easy since I'm a nurse in a busy ICU, but I will do anything to keep the baby safe!! Nativewytdiamnd - 29 weeks is very early. I hope your little one is doing well and getting stronger. :) Thanks again for all the advice. It's just good talking to people who have been through similar situations. I don't have many friends/family who have been through a high risk pregnancy before and your words are very appreciated!

Hi there my second pregnancy was complete placenta previa and My son was born at 27 weeks he was very small, 1 lb 6oz he is 25 years old now and the light of my life. God will not put on you more than you can bear. hope all goes well for you

Thanks for the well wishes and it's good to hear that your son pulled through being so premature 25 years ago! It gives me lots of hope :) Babies can be resilient sometimes. We are at 22 weeks and counting...so far so good.
