we are going to start trying for another baby. we really want a girl. does anyone have any suggestions on how to try for a girl? i've read about all the positioning and counting/timing methods...anyone had good experience with these???? i've also been to www.choosethesexofyourbaby.com. chinese birth calendar didn't work w/ noah. i usually don't believe in stuff like this, but we just want a girl so bad that i'll try just about anything (besides invitro).
To my knowledge, unless you hire a professional to "create" a girl embryo, there's no real chance of "picking" using any of the wive's tale methods. Good luck TTC.
I read in Parade magazine (or some insert magazine in newspaper) several months ago that consuming certain foods while conceiving increase your chances of having a certain sex. One of the foods was bananas but I can't remember what sex that was associated with and how much it increased the odds.
When I was in graduate school, there were about 5 times as many boys born to students as there were girls born. My theory was the water.
There's also some speculation that eating yams increases the chances of having multiple births. There's a tribe in east Africa, I think, that has a diet composed of yams and has the highest incident of multiple births in the world. But who knows. Multiple births can also be a genetic trait. Or maybe it is the water too. ;)
Some wives tales have a grain of truth, but grains are not certainties.
I've read that "girl" sperm (the ones with the X chromosome) swim slower than the male sperm (with a Y chromosome). They also tend to live longer. If you want to increase the chances of conceiving a girl, it is best to try to "fertilize" the egg a couple of days before it is released from the ovary. Thus, the male sperm have all died off and the female sperm are sitting there "waiting". You would then try to avoid introducing new sperm as you get closer to egg release. (thus avoiding the fast male sperm interfering) That would involve really knowing when you are going to ovulate in advance... which may be hard. I know I can generally tell when I ovulate, but I have NO idea when that egg is released! I hope that makes sense.... they did in fact do a story on it on the Today Show not too long ago. Good luck!
Good luck with this one. I wanted a girl so bad, as i have two boys already, and here i sit with my third boy in my lap. there is no way to get the gender you want, i even prayed real hard, just love whatever you have.
My mom shared the same theory with me as Annie M. did above about fertilizing early in your cycle because the 'girl' sperm are faster swimmers. My cycle was always too irregular to actually prove this theory out - but good luck!

MicroSort is a technique for separating X and Y sperm, with a success rate of 91% for a girl, and 76% for a boy. This is the only method proved to effectively sort X and Y sperm, and is available only in the US.
We did everything to get a girl: Chinese calendar, inseminate a week before ovulation(because girl sperm are slow and boys will die off), shallow penetration for inseminate(the vaginal acids kill boy sperm), missionary position, etc... And we got a BOY!!! it's a 50/50 chance no matter what you do!
But it's fun to "try" to think that you're doing anything to choose the gender!
