PETS AND PREEMIES

So, I live in Atlanta and do not have family here. My boyfriend has a cousin and a friend that are from the same state that he is from, which their girlfriends/fiance are my very good friend too. So, every holiday we spend it at one anothers homes. This is how it usually works: Thanksgiving is by boyfriends cousin, christmas eve is our friends house and Easter is mine. Now this year we have a WONDERFUL addition to the holiday festivities...Hassan and his cute butt (lol)! I said we should do christmas eve at my house b/c my friend has two cats, a dog and a bird...in a two bedroom apartment. Im not totally sure, but, I don't think that all that pet dander is good for Hassan who has chronic lung disease. What are your views on this??? She got really offended that I want to do it NOT at her house. Im still not going over there with him but just want to see if Im over-reacting. Thanks!

The bird would scare me the most! Bird feces are really toxic, and my husband's aunt has a bird that flies around the damn house, and he poops everywhere. I didn't let my kids out of my arms when we went to their house - ick!!!! In general, I don't think the dander is really that bad for kids, unless they have a propensity for allergies, and if that's a fear, then avoid it. But overall, I think it's more about cleanliness, how well they keep their animals, then about the dander. Hassan is still very young, I would just make sure that everyone at the festivities are healthy, I'd be more concerned about that than the pets! Good luck and have fun!

I was going to say the same thing as the previous post. I would be more worried about taking him around all the people, rather than the pets! You never know if someone is on the verge of getting sick and that would be horrible. We are spending the holidays alone this year unfortunately.

i would worry too... not bc of the number of pets... but the number of pets in that small of an environment. i would make the same decision!

WE spend the holidays with just the four other people and they all know they cannot be around him if ill. I also have masks in my house if needed but they know they cannot come in the hosue if sick. And quadmomma, thats my concern, the space with the # of pets.

Id be more concerned about the number of pets in ssuch a small environment as well. We had 3 cats and im very allergic to them without medication. We live in a 2 bdr apt ans we found homes for our furbabies. Our concern was baby having my allergies, as well as one of the cats who became jealous and decided to pee everywhere

May I offer a balancing point of view?

Kids raised with pets --even preemies-- have a *lower* incidence of allergies as they grow. We kept our cat & dog on the guidance of our pediatrician, and my former 28-weeker is best friends with both; both he and my youngest have little to no allergy problems, and he was discharged from the pulmonologist at 10 mos. (7 adj.).

On the other hand, I'd be concerned because your son hasn't been exposed to pets, and now he'd be in a small space with them...

Just a thought. :)

I totally agree, cats and dogs are great for families and good for kids immunities! I still think birds are gross, at least ones that don't poop in their cage - just my opinion!

I've heard the same as happybunny202 and mygirls mom.
I have a dog and a rabit at my house and we haven't had any problems even with a 25 weeker with CLD. We also babysit and invite other dogs over on occassion and haven't had issues with breathing. I don't know anything about birds though.
My family is also very upset that we have said no to family gatherings for this winter, there is to much going around and none of them have agreed to be careful. It is unfortunate that everyone else in our lives is not supportive of how protective we need to be for our little ones long term health.

Best of luck to you :-)
