Nail issues

Matteo's finger nails peel, they grow up ward and he has no half moon. They have always been this way. His toe nails are like nubs, they've NEVER really grown, but now it's become thick in certain areas and sorta sharp, although it's never grown out in length, like I've never even once trimmed his toe nails and he's 18 months old. What the heck is wrong with him?!! Should I be concerned??

What's a half moon? Zoe has very square fingernails, sharp at the edges. Her toenails grow all ragged in shape. Her nails grow a lot, though, I'm at them all the time. Unfortunately, she takes after her father nail-wise. I've always thought his nails were weird looking, especially on his enormous feet. Does anyone in your family have nails like Matteo's? The only other thing I can think of, which I'm sure you've checked, is that anemia can cause brittle nails. Good luck figuring it out!

I recommend that you contact his pediatrician.

I have three kids and all of them started out with wierd, terrible nails.
The toenails seem to grow upward and come to a point at each corner. The sides of the toenails are connected to the skin on the side so they are very difficult to clip.
The older kids started getting more normal looking nails when they were about 5 years old.
Hope that helps.

No, everyone in my family has normal nails, and so does my husband. My hubby has thick man nails but that's it lol. I've been looking it up and I'm worried it could be connected to thyroid or maybe vitamin A dificiency (although not sure how!). Oh the half moon is the white or lighter area at the tops of your nails...he doesn't have it at all, not even a little.

I have to ask C ped about his pinky nail. It had been looking weird and today at the store I was looking at and it was yellow. I thought maybe he had something on it. As a picked at it his nail started to come off. When I got home I pulled it off the rest of the way and the nail was dead. The underneath looks funny too. I have no idea what happened. Not sure if he had an infection or if he slammed into a cabinet. They do have weird toe nails tho and B has a very small on one of his toes because he had blueberry toes for a few weeks.

I know kids with skin conditions can have weird nails. My son has flakey nails and they have ridges and are thick (not too thick or discolored, just not normal) but he does have the half moon. He is seen by a pediatric dermatologist and has many symptoms of psoriasis but no definitive diagnosis- thank goodness he's outgrown the scaley red patches- and now is treated for very dry skin and eczema. His nails grow down and not up- sort of like cutting into his skin. He's shown great improvement with age and his nails look pretty normal now.

A good multi-vitamin may be a good idea for him just in case he is lacking anything. My son is a great eater, and I still give him a multi everyday.

Also, you can give him some omegas, they have all kinds (fish, flax, etc), and have some flavored for kids.

This should help!
