My fiance has H1N1

0 Recommendations

We're pretty sure my fiance has the H1N1. Where we live the hospitals are not even allowing patients that suspect they have it into the hospital. I don't know what to do though with my children, especially my preemie. Any advise on how to make sure they don't get it?

Ask your doc on phone!!! you should maintain a distance while talking with him. Dont allow him to come near the babies.

Wash hands a ton, especially him. I would try to keep him away from most of you, and if he needs to be in the same room, have him wear a mask, that he changes every 15 minutes (that's how long they are effective.) I'd sleep on the couch if I were you as well, and make sure after he goes to bed you disinfect all of the door knobs and handles, faucets, etc. that he has touched - use a diluted bleach mixture, not lysol or wipes, they really don't kill a lot unless they soak the surface for upwards of 10 minutes. The problem is, this flu is super contagious, and remains so for upwards of 14 days after symptoms appear, so unless he doesn't live there, it will be tough to not all catch it. Good luck.

I would take my babies and go stay with family or a friend until he is no longer contagious....if that is possible

I second the recommendations of mygirlsmom.
In addition to that, if the children start to show symptoms, ask their doctor about whether they can be treated with Tamiflu or Relenza.
They are not vaccines, so they don't prevent you from being sick, but if you do catch the virus, they can shorten the duration of the illness and lessen the severity of the symptoms. They are most effective if taken within the first 48 hours of symptoms.

Also can you be tested to see if you have the virus too? After my son was born someone in the maternity ward contracted the measles and I was not allowed into the NICU unil I either got a test to prove I did not have the measles or wated a month for the incubation period to pass. Of course I got the test done, the results took a week to come in, but still better than a month of separation.
Even though its hard to be separated better safe than sorry when it comes to the NICU.

You also may want to ask for a preventative dose of Tamiflu for you LO. My 10 year old tested positive for influenze A back in sept so she was treated as if she had H1N1 and my preemie was given a preventative dose so that she wouldn't get. As far as preventing the spread around your house, keep you fiance confined to one room of the house. I kept my 10 year old in her room and only allowed her to use our upstairs bathroom. I washed my hands a lot and disinfected my house constantly and neither my husband or myself got sick. Good luck!

We both are wearing masks and gloves. We also have been disinfecting. The hospital up here won't even let patients in anymore who think they have the H1N1 because it's been so bad where we live. What are the symptoms in children? I have a 20 month old and a almost 15 weeks old actual but almost 4 weeks corrected.

My boss came in sick today!!! I worked at the other end of the office, and just sent an email saying that I won't be coming into work if he is coming in. We'll see where that goes. Ughhh! Stay healthy, my friends!!!

My 10 year old daughter started with an upset stomach that, in a matter of hours, turned into a high fever, congestion, cough, stuffy nose, and general fatigue. Fever wouldn't even break with tylenol or motrin. She was miserable. Just remember Tamiflu works best within 48 hours of symptoms so if you think your LO is infected call your pediatrician. Good luck and stay healthy!
