Is this part of teething?

Ethan had his first tooth pop through last week. It doesn't seem to be all the way through yet, plus the gum area right next to the tooth seems red and irritated like another tooth may be coming. He's been chewing on things and drooling a lot, which I know is normal for teething. However, tonight he just started screaming at the top of his lungs like he was in terrible pain. Nothing dh or I did calmed him down. I gave him a couple Hylands teething tablets and he continued to scream. I used some Orajel on him, and other than stopping briefly to spit, sputter, and give me a "why did you do that?" look (he hates Orajel) that gave no results either. I finally gave him some Tylenol and that, with a bottle, rocking, and his white noise machine finally calmed him down. He did wake up about an hour later screaming again, but I just rocked him briefly and he went back to sleep. His nanny said he was like this all day-if he wasn't sleeping, he was crying. She said he woke up once with a nose full of green boogers too, which worried me because it's so important to keep the babies healthy this winter so their lungs can grow, heal, and catch up. He wasn't acting sick, isn't congested, and hasn't had any "boogers" since then-he did this one other day too where he woke up from a nap with a nasty green goop filled nose (a week or so ago) and that time, too, he didn't seem sick or congested, and his nose never got plugged up again. Plus, he's seen by a public health nurse twice a month, so he is checked up on often.
Still, with as sick as that little boy was after he was born so early, I worry about him. Is the snotty nose and uncontrollable crying part of teething??
I can't really compare him to Natalie as she doesn't seem to be teething yet.

Could be teething or colic. It could also be the start of a cold, so watch out. You should probably take him to the doctor. I suspect it's nothing serious. The snot could have built up from him crying so much. My son suddenly started acting that way, and continued to do so for about four months. He was literally crying if he wasn't sleeping, and then moved on to not sleeping unless he was in my arms. My son just had bad colic, but it is possible your son is sick, and with a preemie it's always better to find out sooner rather than later.

it sounds like teething. as far as his nose...how ofter do you clean it out? i clean noahs out once a week and i get a ton of boogers (i don't do it more often then that cause of irritaion from O2).

that's what my daughter does when the tooth she's cutting is finally breaking through the gum. it's always best to be safe, though, and have a check up as ear infections go hand in hand with cutting teeth. my daughter's never had one yet, but my niece did all the time with her teeth.
good luck!

If he has had a stuffy nose, he could be getting an ear infection. Since the sinus and middle ear are connected, it's a possibilty. My understanding is that that when babies are cutting front teeth, they have a pretty sharp little edge so they don't have a lot of trouble coming up and once the skin has broken, there shouldn't be much pain at all. That's why molars are more painful, they don't cut through the skin as easily and so it causes more swelling, prolonged pain etc. I would get his ears checked.

When my son started teething he did not like the Orajel either. We use Hyland's teething gel and it sure seems to help. We buy it at Hi-Health, I saw Hyland's products at Babies R Us the other day however I did not see the teething gel.

Good luck!!

I'm going to throw something totally different out there. Could these things be unrelated? The only time either of my boys have cried to the point where nothing could calm them was when they have had hernias. When the hernia reduces (either on its' own or with help) the crying stops. Inguinal hernias are not uncommon in preemie boys. Perhaps the next time this happens try taking a look to see if there is a hard buldge in his groin area. It's a long shot, but had I not figured out that the reason Timothy kept crying with that first hernia was because something was very wrong, he would have lost intestines. It is probably nothing, but it's just a thought.

I have a rule of thumb that when I can't identify the cause of crying and it is crying in pain not fussing, I take my babies to the doctor. Better to rule out anything serious. I'd rather pay a $10 co-pay and have peace of mind. Try to get the first appt. of the morning so there are not a lot of sick kids coughing all over your baby.

my son cut his bottom two teeth at almost the exact same time. he was very angry and nothing helped. he had a cold or at least it seemed that way when they cut. he is in the middle of cutting the top two right now and same thing only this time the cold was alot worse and he got a sinus infection from it and had to be on antibiotcs for 10 days. he also ran a low grade fever with both the top and bottom and had tons of drool and bit everything including the couche me the cats I mean anything. Nothing helped... till they finished cutting luckily his came in quick.

Thanks for the ideas and input. The babies go in for a Synagis shot tomorrow at 8:30, so at least we will see the nurse and can ask their opinion. . .
