help with toddler spitting?

So Anna (former 33 weeker now 21 months actual age) has begun spitting. Sometimes she is just spitting (like blowing a raspberry, but lots of spit) but mostly it is when she is drinking. It seems that when she no longer wants to drink, or maybe she just thinks it is fun or funny, she lets the rest of the liquid dribble out of her mouth and then spits the last of it out and all over the place. My husband and I are both educators and for the life of us we just cannot figure out how to handle this. We initially thought to ignore it, and would take away whatever she was drinking. But it is getting worse. She is not only getting milk or water all over her clothes, but also all over the floor and yesterday she spit it at her 8 month old brother.

Besides putting less in her cup, any other suggestions? Anyone else dealing with this? I am sure it is toddler antics, but we both feel we need to do something to curb it.

My daughter does this as well. Just the other day she took a big mouthful of milk while in the car and with big cheeks, I encouraged her to swallow it. She then let it dribble all over. Since we were in the car, I couldn't put her in a time out but at home when she spits, she gets a two-minute time out.

She has to aplogize when she gets up and she tells me she's sorry for spitting. She clearly knows it's wrong and so my husband and I have attributed it to being a toddler (she's 28 months actual). She doesn't hit or anything like that so this seems to be her little thing. It's getting better and we notice she only does it just before or during a tantrum. It is clearly her little dig on the situation if she is not happy with the way things are going. We stopped ignoring it because it wasn't going away with that approach.

Good luck with it! This is one of those things that after having a 24 weeker, I chalk up to being "normal"! Kinda nice for a change.
