Good toys for Preemies

0 Recommendations

Hi everyone! I am looking for some ideas for good toys for my daughter, who is 7 months old (4 months adjusted) for christmas. Of course she will be 9 months old (6 months adjusted) at christmas. Shis is alittle behind her adjusted age(with gross and fine motor skills) due to being a micro preemie, but she is starting to talk and seems to be right on track with her true age mentally. I am hoping some of you parents who have through this before can suggest some toys that have worked with helping your preemie develop and toys that she might be more interested in.

I am personally not a fan of flashy, light-blinking toys that switch songs every 15 seconds. I suspect they contribute to our ADD society. I seriously don't think that they are good for a child's developing mind.

For a 6 month old, I would say soft blocks with different textures on the sides is nice.

A soft picture album is great too.

The Usborne "Touchy Feely" book series it really nice for babies and toddlers. The books are made of card board, so they won't rip. Lots of textures!

It isn't too early to read to baby!

For when she is around 8-9 months adjusted, I recommend getting cups for her bath tub. Gets baby used to the idea of how to manipulate water.

Around that time, putting things in buckets is good practice. So getting a shape sorter (probably won't sort the shapes yet, but will put the shapes in a container) is useful/entertaining.

Megan loved her snap beads. Later on, we used them in therapy to build strength by pulling them apart.

I second the Usborne books. I love their books and just hosted a party. They have a lot of them at Barnes and Noble (That's Not My ____ ) are super cute books.

I did like the ball popper toy by Fisher Price. Or even just some balls to play with. Megan was always a big fan of play phones. :D

Our son loved and still loves balls. Some great ones we have found are: O ball (you can put a ribbon thru and swing over head to promote reach, turning, rolling etc, plus just as a ball it is a neat concept), sensory balls (they are squishy and have nubs on them), and this pack of I believe Playskool balls (these are smaller, hard and each "do something" - like are two tones and the inner part spins, different textures).

Now that DS is older our PT has us use the O ball in the doorway to promote balance, our son picks up one foot to kick the ball. - These are one of our favorite toys.

DS loves books too - our favorite Usbournes are "That's not my Truck" and "That's not my lion"

Other ideas would be: stacking cups and a shape sorter that has 3 shapes (easier to master than the 5/6 shape ones)

This is a favorite topic here, it seems. My first reaction is don't buy anything and save your money in case you need it later. See first link.. :)
