Developmental Delays

0 Recommendations

My son was born at 34 weeks at 3lbs14oz. He is now 18.5 months adjusted and has many developmental delays. He is still not walking, but started to walk with his push toy recently. He babbles but does not say any words, does not wave bye, bye or clap. He is in the EI program and recieves PT/OT and speech. He has been seen by a neurologist because his delays and has a small head circumference. Although his head per the neurologist is in proportion to his body. He has had a MRI and numerous blood work and everything has come back normal so far. He is the most loving child. He laughs and smiles all the time, loves to be held by everyone and is very social. He is on the going playing all the time. I guess I am just trying to see if there are other kids out there like him and what their progress has been. His therapists are very positive about his progress.

My twins were born at 35 weeks, but my son only weighed 3lbs3oz (my daughter was 4lbs5oz.) Now at 20 months he also is delayed. He can do a wobbely walk across a room, but is not really walking yet. He wears orthodics (AFOs) to help him. He gets PT&OT and I am putting off speech for now, and he seems to be starting to say some words. He is also super happy & smiley and funny. He walks on his knees & hops all around on his knees like a frog. He has an MRI scheduled next week, but no matter what it shows, I think he is going to be just fine. I'm thankful that he is happy, and if he has some small little physical problem we will deal with it.

HSA I was wondering if your sone has tone or the clonuis reflex? Have you asked PT what they think *do you need a diagnosis* for any reason? My son is 3 he was in Pt from 13 - 19 months his lack of progress made us eventually change doctors and then we went to a neurologist who did an MRI and it was clear. Our CP diagnosis came with the clonis(sp) reflex but we really only needed it as such for services that we were not getting and could (that is a long story). I personally think good PTs in our case really helped us figure out what is going one. We have since had one more MRI to rule out other issues.

My son sounds a lot like yours. My twins will be four on the 14th... they were 36 weekers but John had IUGR and was 4lbs at birth (his twin was 6lbs 3oz).
His MRI showed brain damage due to hypoxia (lack of oxygen). He eventually walked and talked at 27 months.
He has no mental issues at all, the opposite in fact, he is deemed as "gifted". He is in mainstream pre-school and is doing great.
We still have some mobility issues as he has mild mixed tone CP. He can walk great now (but still doesn't do the heel to toe motion) but when he climbs stairs and runs you can tell there is something off.

He is very verbal, in fact too verbal lol :) he has a photographic memory (so no tricking this child!). He has been in PT and OT since he was 2.5 years old and we have seen great progress.
Another thing that really helped physically is the fact he is in a swim team doing 3 hrs of swimming a week.
He is an eccentric child (he also has Sensory issues) but I think he will do fine in life :) He is certainly a little off the "normal" mark but on the other hand, this can be a blessing too ;)
He is very charismatic and very popular with his peers and teachers...
We have feeding issues still and weight gain problems and vision and hearing issues but nothing too major and we are dealing with those.
All in all he is a very happy well adjusted child :)
Hang in there!!!
hugs

35 weeker 3 lbs 13 oz , severe iugr, nec, in nicu 4 months. does not walk/crawl only scoots. tries to say a few things. seeing o/t and p/t no diagnosis yet. mentioned sensory issues.

Thank you so much that really makes me feel better. How did they diagnose the mild mixed tone CP? My son's therapists also think that he has sensory issues. It seems that he understands things but since he isn't talking it is hard to know for sure. I really appreciate hearing your story.

Thank you for your reply I hope everything goes well with the MRI!

My son doesn't have clonuis reflex and his therapists think he has a lot of little things that have made him delayed. I don't need the diagnosis for anything yet, but for my own peice of mind. Thanks for your input.

They diagnosed Mixed Tone because below the waist he was hypertonic and above the waist, hypotonic.
We fixed the hypertonia pretty quickly, but he still does not have developed muscles on his upper body, so we are still working on that.

OK thanks!

Hi. My 19 month old (36 weeker weighing 4 lbs 2 oz -- 29 day NICU stay) just recently started walking. Before that she was quite content to scoot everywhere. No crawling for her until after she walked so this is also recent. She waves but talks very little. We just recently started the EI process and are looking forward to the extra help.
My son is almost 4 and was recently diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of speech so we are worried about her speech as well.
We have the opposite issue with head circumference -- they have larger than average heads for their size. It was decided that this is just hereditary and not a concern after all.
Sounds like you are doing a great job in looking for answers. Enjoy him.
