I started rice cereal at 7 months actual, 4 months adjusted. Megan is a 25 weeker. It took about 3 weeks before she would eat any of the cereal.
5 months adjusted. Only after he was lunging for our plates. We had wanted to wait until 6 months adjusted, but the lunging was a sign he was ready.
It is better to hold off on solids if you can. Solids often impede milk consumption. If this happens, weight gain will often slow down or stop. Solids initially are given just to teach kids how to eat, not for notable nutritional benefit. The AAP doesn't recommend solids until 6 months of age. And the 6-9 month period is just a teaching period, not for major nutritional benefit.
We were told to wait until our little guy was 6 months adj, 8 months actual. He's also 4 months and no where ready for cereal or any type of babyfood.
My lil guy is the acception here I think!! He was born at 32 weeks and started cereal at 5 months. He took to it like he always knew how, and by 8 months old he was off all baby food and on table food completly - well, besides breastfeeding!!
I started banana at 5 months actual (3.5 adjusted). Apple at 6 months actual (4.5 months adjusted) then was the Rice cereal at 6.5 months actual (5 months adjusted).
Archana
Jude was 8 months we tried some cereal in his formula due to reflux and he had a reaction then we waited. What did you Dr. suggest?
Adayah was a 23 weeker, 1lb and ozs and she has CLD. She goes to a LUNG SPECIALIST once a month she put her on cereal at 1 month adjusted because she did do want her using all of calories to breathe. She is on oatmeal cereal the rice cereal caused constipation. She is now 7 months chron and 3 adjusted. she is 9 lbs. They are recommending that in addition to adding the cereal to her formula ,she now be fed cereal twice a day with a spoon to increase her weight.
We started Brayden at about 4-4.5mos adjusted at the dr's recommendation for weight gain and because how well he was sucking and using his mouth and tongue when playing with his toys. She also told us that since it was a bit early if he didn't like it or didn't well at it to stop and we'd try again in a few weeks. It took him some getting used to it and I would have to alternate a few bite of cereal then bottle and vice versa until he got the hang of it. He is now wanting stuff on our plates.
I say go with your dr's recmmendation but wait as long as possible. I thought Brayden was ready, but didn't ask bec I jnew it was early, but Pedi thought it best to go ahead for his weight so I did. Had I thought he wasn't ready I would have told her and we would have waited. Same goes the other way, if you KNOW they are ready I'd at least ask and get dr's opinon. I started applesauce before telling dr, but I knew he was ready and she said I was right for listening to my gut and told me he could even go to twice a day on his food. But that wasn't unti 1.5mos after starting one cereal feed a day and making sure he was doing well tolerating it.
I say go with your gut and dr consult.
Emma was 2 pound 12 ounces and 10 weeks early. We were told to wait until she was six months adjusted. However, at her six month (actual) appointment the doctor told us we could start cereal. We tried cereal, then veggies then some fruit. She wasn't ready for the fruit, so we have cut back to just cereal and veggies at 9 months.
We started around 7 months actual - 4 1/2 corrected. I was nervous about it and got different answers from different doctors and nurses, some say go with adjusted, others with actual age. The fact that she was 3 1/2 months early made me thing she wasn't really quite ready based on her actual age so I dedided to wait until she was closer to 6 months before we started other foods.
At first we really only did the cerial once a day - mostly for socialization and teaching so that most of her calories still came from breast milk or formula.
Hi- i wanna say i started around 8 or 9 mths. so my baby would have been 6 -7 mths gestional.
it all is really up to you and baby when you think its a good time to start. your baby will tell you.
The neonatologists began giving my 27-weeker rice cereal while she was still in the NICU due to severe reflux. At that time, she was around 33-34 weeks gestational age.
