Carissa day 1 post-op

0 Recommendations

My Carissa was born @ 23wks and is now 5 1/2 months old 1 1/2 m corrected.
We have been in the NICU since 5/31/09
After being transfered to a new hospital almost 1month ago it was discovered that her oxygen requirements were so high because was having such bad reflux and was aspirating on it. Her lung are poor to begin with now they have been getting wet & heavy as the formula & stomach acid were sitting in there.
So as the drs laid it out to us...it was either go thru with surgery for a gtube/ nissen or chancer her aspirating and eventually getting pnemonia & dying! So not much thought there....surgery was yesterday.
I am ok and know that I made the best decision but my fear lies here...Since arriving @ this new hospital on 41/2L of o2 @ 100% they managed to ween her to .5L @21% ....for the surgery they had to intubate her, while still in the recovery rm after surgery they extubated however, she had so much sedation that she was forgetting to breate a few to many times, now she is intubated for over 24hrs.
I know it is going to take time for her heal & IT WILL HAPPEN! I am just so axious to get my baby girl home!!
Can anyone relate??? Gtube /nissen advice??

I know I could not wait to get my baby out of the nicu. after a while thry start acting like she is theirs, but you just keep thinking positive and positive will happen.

good luck

I can relate to the heavy sedation. My DD had a scope done while in the NICU to check for reflux and other reasons for her eating issues and after the scope she had to be re intubated for about 3 days and had B's & A's for about 48 hours constantly. I literally cried for two days and had no idea what was going on. She stayed in the NICU for 3 months and it seemed like I would never get to bring her home. I watched every baby leave the Nicu and more babies come and then go and my DD had been there the longest. It was so frustrating. Especially when younger babies than her came and then got to go home. But in time they do get to come home. I know it seems like it won't ever happen but it does just try to hang in there. I know it's hard. I hope your DD will start to improve greatly now that she has had the nissen surgery. Thoughts and prayers are with you both.

My daughter was doing the same thing. She was born at 26 weeks and is now 31 months and has had her GTUBE since she was 10 months. Its the best thing we ever did. Good Luck, If you have any Questions feel free to ask.
