Can walk, but can't stand still?

0 Recommendations

I have a former 34 weeker who was IUGR. He has been delayed in all areas. He does not have CP but was wearing AFOs for increased tone then he was reevaluated and now has low tone - so he is wearing SMOs. He crawled at 14 months and walked at 25 months. He has now been walking for almost 2 months but he can not stand independently for more than a few seconds. So while he is able to walk, he isn't functional because once he stops he falls down and he can't get back up to standing without pulling up on something.

Has anyone else dealt with this or have any advice?

Falls Physical therapy

The best advice I can give to you is if you seek answers be persistant! Dr's will look right over you if you don't. My son was just diagnosed with CP because I wanted an answer..Is your son in physical therapy? My son's PT gave me a lot of guidance on what to do and which doctors to see. I hope this helps!
good luck,
Sarah

My former 32-weeker is 22 months & just started "really" walking last month. He had been doing the same thing you describe for a long time - we were wondering if he'd ever be a full time walker! He has finally been able to pull together the muscle coordination to stand still. Our PT was great helping him get to this point. Gross motor has been his only delay.

mommyinneed - He does not have CP. He is seen regularly by a Neurologist and a Orthopaedist. His diagnosis is "complications of premature" nice and specific - huh?

MBA - He has had PT since he turned 1. He also has OT, DT, ST, and Anat Baniel Therapy. His biggest issue is motor planning or muscle coordination as you stated. His PT said it is harder to stand still than it is to walk so I guess we will just have to be patient.

My son did this when he was a new walker- he would dance around and then fall when he needed to stay in one place. His pt said it was due to low muscle tone in his trunk. She did alot of work with him on a giant ball, basically sitting him on it holding only his legs so he wouldn't fall off, then she would rotate the ball so he was forced to use his trunk muscles to stay upright. At first she could only move it an inch in each direction, but over time she was really able to move it all around and he could stay upright (better than I could do, I'm sure lol). He hated it because it hurt, so I used to let him watch tv while I did it with him every day. It took 3-4 months, but it solved the problem. She also had me hold him on my hip near something he wanted and force him to lean to get to it (we spent alot of time at ToysRus doing this!). I had to make sure he wasn't holding on to me with his hands but that he was using his trunk muscles to lean over and to lean back. Again, it took a couple of months and at first I had to stand really close to things, but over time he could go way over and back without using his arms.
Anyway, this works wonders for him! Hope you find what works for him
Becky
