can i give her something for a cough....?

0 Recommendations

Hello ladies! Well - we have a sick household. We were tested yesterday, and it is not H1N1 - thank God. Izabella has a persistant cough. When we left her doctor's office he said if it becomes worse it's ok to give her something for the cough. In my hurry to get OUT of sickville, I didn't ask him what I can give her. I just called the pharmascist at Walgreens and he advised me that ususally cough medicine is for ages 4 and up and can't make a reccomendation. Any ideas?

I should probably add that she is almost 14mo actual / 12mo adjusted. She weighs 25lb 14oz and is just over 31" tall.

Holy moly she's a very big girl!!! There's baby vapor rub you can put on her chest, possible tylenol, there are saline drops you can use. All of this is in the baby section of walgreens. I'm in the same boat sort of now, he had a terrible cough forever and now that it's gone he was fine and healthy for maybe a week and now he's got the worst runny and congested nose! UGH

lol - yes, she is a very big girl. she is very proportionate though. Her Dad is a big guy - and I think that she must take after him! Thanks for the advice...I don't know why I didn't think of baby vapo-rub. I think it will help her to be more comfortable! OK - off to Walgreens! Hope your little guy feels better soon!

My doc advised against vapo rub until 2 years old since it can trigger asthma in some children.
I think we used Delsym for our daughter but I honestly can't remember at what age.
I would make sure that you are using a humidifier becuase often times coughs are not coming from the lungs, it's mucus dripping down the back of the throat that causes irritation and if you keep the mucus thin (with humidifier) it will be less irritating and the cough will be more productive. (Sorry for the run on sentence there :)

True, there are so few things you can use on these little ones!
Since you baby is a year adjusted, you can give honey to soothe her cough - 1/2 tsp is the "dose". I think the chest rub Coastiewife88 is referring to is Nature's Baby Organics Ah-choo chest rub. I can get it at a natural health store where I live, but I know www.onestepahead.com carries it too.
Hope your little one is feeling well soon! Mine are both sick - one in the hospital:-( I am just at home for a quick break while dh is with Ethan.

sshuckhart - the health food store near us did not have the Nature's Baby Organics, but they did have something called Badger Winter Wonder Balm - all organic with soothing lavender too! Seemed to help a bit to clear up her congestion...thank you for the suggestion of an organic rub...I feel much better putting that on her then Vic's!

I hope that your little ones are feeling better soon too. I can imagine it's hard having one of your babies in the hospital. Thinking of you and your babies...wishing everyone a quick recovery.

i put vicks vapor rub on Casey's feet then put socks on him so it's not as strong. call your doctor's office back and ask about c-phen. Casey was prescribed that last year when he had a cold. He was only 1.5 actual and it worked great for him. According to my friend, the FNP, the danger in most medicines (for babies) is that they are combination meds and can cause interactions in some babies that result in seizures.

we ended up giving her Mucinex DM mini melts per her pedi. half the dose, and boy does it help! she has finally gotten a decent nights sleep!

Glad your little one is feeling better!
Ethan is back home now - still on nebulizer meds, but hopefully on the mend!

lol.... My thoughts exactly about your baby's weight. My twins are the same ages as yours and they only weigh 20lbs 10oz.

We're in the same boat right now. One of the twins has a cough and lots of mucus. We're using the humidifier and it seems to help. I found a baby rub called Little Colds made by Little Remedies. Anyone have experience with that one?

yeah, i get that a lot. she's a big girl. tall too. the humidifier seems to make her cough worse, but the Badger Winter Balm and the mucinex make a world of difference.

sshuckhart - thank you! I'm glad to hear that your little Ethan is back at home!

Children over a year can be given a tablespoon of honey. In a study it was more effective than any of the cough meds. It was buckwheat honey that was used in the study.
