Blood out of Ostomy?

0 Recommendations

My little one had belly distention after feeding for a week. He is 32 weeks corrected and was born at 26 weeks. His Crp and CBC labs also came back as markers for infection. The stopped his feeds 3 days ago. And then last night, dark red blood in his ostomy bag. Not enough to pull out with a syringe, but not small enough to ignore. Surgeon and neo both say they are just going to "watch it" after look at x-ray. CBC and CRP are trending downward and distention is less. What is this??

The lab tests indicate that the infection is going away so that's good news. The CBC tests many components of blood including the WBC's which indicate that the body is fighting an infection. When the "trend downward", they are getting lower and the treatments for the infection are working. The CRP is a protein made by the liver that would also indicate inflammation and infection. The downward trend and less distention or bloat are good signs for your baby...good luck.

The twin that had the ostomy had all the good signs (blood readings and the distension in hte belly went away...because he was open of course) BUT had dumping syndrome, and then internal bleeding. They were feeding him and had to stop, he went back on TPN, was like that for a week until they decided to re-attach and "see what happens", after reattaching he started feedings and tolerated them fine.

Is the blood coming from the stoma or from the area around it? My daughters area around her stoma got so irritated that it bled quite a bit the last couple weeks before she got reattached. There was nothing they could do but watch it and keep running labs. She had a real problem with her bag staying on because her incision healed badly, and the constant leaking is what irritated her skin and made her bleed.
