Another H1N1 Question

0 Recommendations

I know there have been a lot of posts about H1N1 vaccine but maybe someone can help me with my question. Carter is 6.5 months old, 3.5 corrected. Do they give the vaccine according to chronological age or corrected age? If it is according to chronological age why? What is the reasoning behind waiting 6 months anyway? An immature immune system? Is anyone else in this situation? And has anyone done the regular flu shot and H1N1 at the same time?

I'm not certain about H1N1, but my daughter received her first seasonal flu vaccinations when she was six months actual. This was recommended by both her pediatrician and pulmonologist. Where I live, flu season starts late September to early October, but that first year, she couldn't get vaccinated until mid-November. Until then, her doctors recommended that my husband and I, as well as all other regular caregivers, get vaccinated to essentially "cocoon" her from catching the flu from one of us. I've read that the two vaccines can be given at the same time, but only if they are both the shot since they contain no live viruses.

My Dr. goes by actual age for vaccines. That's all I know.

My dr. goes by actual age also. I questioned his awareness may times asking him if she realized that she was born 3 months early. He would tell me that with vaccinations it goes by how long they have been in the world. It doesn't make any sense to me either.

Vaccines are given by actual age. The benifit of getting the flu shot (and H1N1) outweighs the risk for most of our preemies.

All 4 of my kids have had their seasonal flu shot and my younger 2 have had the H1N1 shot. Once its availiable for the older 2, they will be getting it.

Oh, when my kids got the H1N1 they told me that if the outbreak had happened a few months earlier then the H1N1 vaccine would have been included in the seasonal flu shot. Next year it will be.
