Hello all,

I am John and i have a million questions as you all probably had as well when this first happened with your baby. Firstly, my baby's name is Addison Grace Hartwig. Second, she was born 3 lbs 15 inches long. She has had like 4 platelet transfusions. I am just wanting to know why! Also her eyes are foggy and she just had cultures sent off to find out what this yellow crust is on here eyes. Please anyone who might have insight on any of these things please let me know.

hi john, congrats on your baby girl! my babies had more transfusions than i can count. Not sure about the foggy eyes, i would just keep asking the neos and nurses until you get a clear answer. good luck!

How many weeks early is Addison. Love the name. My twins were Alexa and Addison

It can take a few days to get results on culture tests, be patient for them.
Transfusions are also pretty common if they are running lots of bloodwork on your girl that could be the main reason, preemies can't make enough blood to keep up when the doctors keep taking it all!
Keep posting questions John, we are all here for you.
Congrats on your girl!

My daughter had many transfusions the dr.s simply put it like this if they are taking x amount of blood from your baby and your baby isn't making enough red blood cells on her own yet than they have to give her a blood transfusion to help stabilize her breathing. Without enough blood circulating through the body the lungs wouldn't work properly. Also my daughter had many cultures taken and they are just to check out any possible infections that can occur when they check her CBC to see if she has an elevated white blood cell count that will tell also, but the cultures are to narrow it down. Yellow crust my daughter had around her eyes also it was just conjunctivitis, but the foggy eyes she didn't have so i am just telling you from experience. Good luck.

Congratulations on your liitle girl! I remember the doctor saying that giving blood transfusions can be a catch 22 because the baby can't keep up with what is being taken and yet when blood is given, it sends a signal to the body that it has enough and needs to slow down production. our daughter received about a dozen transfusions in her 90 day NICU stay. Good luck with everything.

is your daughter getting strictly platelets or a unit of red blood cells? Big difference. Did your wife have pre-eclampsia? This can be associated with low platelet count in the baby. One must also be suspicious of something causing usage of the platelets such as some bleeding somewhere (have they done a head ultrasound), or something destroying the platelets (such as an antibody), or of decreased production (less common). Have they done tests to rule some stuff out? What have they told you so far? Congrats on your baby girl. I will help as much as i can!!!

Congrats on your new baby! Just a thought, you can give blood so that she can receive your blood in the transfusions. If I had known that, I would have supplied the twins with my blood! I concur with many here, you usually do get lots of transfusions. Blessings and hang in there!

She only needed platlets. The eye culture is still undetermined. She is doing so much better now. I got to hold her today. I will put up a pic that my wife took. Thank you all so much for the help!

Shelly - as a new mom you wouldn't have been permitted to donate blood for your children. I wanted to, but was told I'd have to wait 6 weeks post-partum, at which point transfusions were no longer needed.

We were also told that if Callie's dad had done directed donation blood that he would be ineligable to donate other tissue or organs that might be more benificial or harder to find donors that would match like a kidney. I still asked him to go donate blood to the blood bank to replace what Callie had been given.

I dont know about blood transfusion but my daughter has had grey color eyeballs. I asked the doc and he said its OK. he was not worried. She dosnt have ROP in her eyes. she was born ar 32 weeks and 5 days 3 lbs 10 oz.

Congrats on your little girl! Keep us updated on her progress:) I will keep you guys in my prayers! How early was Addison??

In reference to the discussion about donating blood to a preemie. My understanding is that most people can not donate to a preemie (even if the type is the same). I can't remember the details, but I think it was something like, most people have been exposed to some virus (or something) and that makes the blood not okay for a preemie. We got VERY LUCKY and my husband's blood tested okay and he was able to donate for one of my girls. If I remember any of the details I will post them.
