A healing umbilical hernia

0 Recommendations

Hi,
I have read different discusions on here about umbiical hernias. My question is does anyone know what they look like when they are starting to heal and recede inwards? Are they still really soft and sqish inwards or does the belly button have a little bit of resistance and softness?

My daughter is 15 months and has had one since birth. It seemed to be healed up completely last fall but a few months later when straining with a bowl movement it popped out just a little bit and has been like that since. Her doctor told me that happens sometimes and it probably was on it's way to being healed but then straining can bring it back out.

To me it looks like a little outiie now and when I feel it to make sure it's still soft it just stays pretty much out a little bit and doesn't go all the way in? I didn't know if any of you knew if that was the normal or not. I have been told to check for softness. It's been like this for awhile now and she seems fine with it but you know how it is to think of something and then start to worry.

Thanks for any help you can offer in advance.
Kimberly

You should always be able to depress it, push the fluid back in. If it's hard then the fluid is stuck and that requires surgery. If it's changed at all since your last peds appt you could always call and ask for a follow up check to make sure it's okay.
