5 months adjusted - not reaching or grabbing

0 Recommendations

Hi, my son who is 5 months adjusted is not showing any interest in reaching, grabbing or batting toys. He was born 6 weeks early but was small for his gestational age and had IUGR. He's cooing, laughing out loud, can roll from tummy to back, brings his hands together, hold on to a toy for a little while if I place it in his hand, and will even grab his feet if he's laying on his back with his feet up. Should I be concerned? Everything I've read said that they should be reaching to grab by 3 - 4 months. My older son was grabbing things around 3 months.

Did any of you have LO's who were not reaching or grabbing by this age? I don't think his shoulders are stiff so I'm not sure why he's not interested. Maybe I'm worrying for nothing. Thanks for any input.

Try working with him......While he is on his belly put things in front of him. Show him toys and put his hand on them. Get one of those gyms for him and put his hand on the toys.....If he is looking at his hands and it wont be long before the toys are next......

Noah is 5 months (on the 6th) {4 months adj.) he he recently, within the past 2-3 weeks is reaching for things. before that he would look at things and hold them if u put them in his hands, but would not reach out 4 ne thing..... his PT wasnt concerned and said he would do it on his own time and he did. but we don't roll yet, he can get on his side, but not roll all the way.

Thanks for your responses. I've done most of the things you suggested but he still is not interested. I guess I'll just keep trying to do what I'm doing now and hopefully he'll figure it out on his own soon.

Congrats on your son!

My daughter had SIUGR. The peri thought she stopped growing at around 29W (she was born at 33W). The NICU doctor said developmentally she would probably be more in the lines of a 29W, so we always did a second adjustment when charting her milestones.

If you havent done so, I would contact the early intervention program in your state. You can ask for a free evaluation and then decide if you would like OT/PT for your little one.

Take care,
Cathy
