34weeks in hospital possible preemie

0 Recommendations

Hi! I have a history of preterm labor. I have one son born at 36weeks 8lbs 6ozs! Yes big! But he had trouble breathing and was in NICU for 8days. I am now 33 weeks 6 days and have been in the hospital for 4days today. Im 4cm 70%effaced. I was on magnesuim until last night they took me off and put me on procardia every6hrs. Im contracting only maybe twice an hour so I will be going home tommorrow. I have gotten the steriod shot fot her lungs. Can anyone give me stories, good or bad, of their babies born early? I am just looking for support and stories like mine. Thank you!

Hi i had a rare pregnancy and i dont want to scare you with mine. But most likely your baby will not have along stay as you are so close to being full term. I was at 27 weeks when my daughter was born and i had no amnio fluid for half my pregnancy my daughters lungs were that of a 9 week old fetus. She had some catching up to do. I have seen babies such as your previous in the NICU and they only keep them on the vent for minutes and then they go straight to Cannula you should be ok as long as you have no serious complications or the baby so far. Good Luck.

My girls were born at 30 weeks and although they were in the hospital for 35 days to learn to feed, they did awesome. 34 weeks is really good, as preemies are concerned. Of course, there are some chances that he could have some lung trouble or feeding issues, but if you have the steriods, you should very likely be in good shape. Best wishes!!!

Thanks ladies! Im reading online and learning at this point its all up to the baby and how she reacts when she is born. So praying everything goes well! Xo

My son is 6 wkd 0 adjusted. I spent 2 1/2 wks on bedrest for PPROM and delivered at 33 6/7. He did great! 4 lb 8.5 oz no oxygen needed did need bili light and isolette for temp. It took 2 1/2 weeks to learn to drink from bottles and go home. We're still working on nursing and reflux issues but almost 7 lbs!

Wade was born at 33 weeks, 5 days and weighed 4lbs, 11oz. He spent 17 days in hospital, just learning how to suck; as soon as he was feeding on his own he came home, no problems with jaundice, breathing etc. He did have RSV shots the first year, just for precaution, but he's perfectly healthy, not even a cold...he's now 17 months (15 adjusted) and 18.5 lbs fully dressed...still small, but walking on his own, has almost all his teeth and eating everything in sight!

My son just turned a year on the 23rd. He weighs 22 1/2 pounds and is in the 100%title for height. He isnt walking on his own but he eats everything and NICU is a distant memory, but now with my little girl coming I had a tour of the NICU at the hospital Im staying at now. It brings back bad memories. I almost cried but kept it inside while doing the tour. I just remeber how emoitional and helpless you feel. NICU is so hard and Im praying she cooks longer and is healthy so we can avoid it all together!

Mom was in the hospital on bedrest for cervical thinning and contractions for 5 weeks before birth. Never had magnesium as the oral med was mostly effective for regular contractions and the occasional Terb shot was effective for breakthrough contractions.

Our twins were born on Aug 24, 2009 at 34 weeks, 2 days and were in the NICU for 12 and 13 days (one went home a day earlier than the other). Neither needed o2 or any other life support so we were very lucky.

Baby A was 3lb 15oz and B was 4lb 6oz. As of their last ped visit 9 days ago, A was 5lb 10oz and B was 6lb 5oz.

We are home and doing great (but a little sleep deprived).

We really needed this one as we had lost several pregnancies including a twin pregnancy at 20 weeks that was ended from having an amnio (which I am the leading advocate against!).

Ask your nurse to have one of the NICU staff come and talk to you about what to expect. This is unbelievably helpful. You can ask them lots of questions and they are there to help! Do it!

There is definitely hope! Be hopeful!

Whoops- I reread the thread see you already visited the NICU. Hopefully this helped ease your mind some.

Here's one to keep in mind- if they weren't pretty sure your baby would be ok if born at this gestational age, they would NOT send you home.

Take heart in that!

Good luck!

My daughter was born at 33 weeks, 1 day - we still don't know why. I was in the hospital for 8 days at that point taking procardia every 3 hours. I got both doses of the steroid shots for her lungs. She weighed 5.2 lbs at birth. She had no problems breathing on her own. She nipple fed right away and was only gavaged 2 or 3 times. She was in the NICU for 12 days and only needed to be treated for jaundice. She and I had the ABO blood incompatibility - she's A+, I'm O+ - and the neonatologists told me she most likely would have needed the photo therapy even if she was full term due to the blood typing.

I wish you luck! Keep us posted!

Trinity was born at 34 weeks, weighing 4 lbs 13 oz and 17 inches long. She was in NICU for 13 days. She only needed to be on oxygen for a few hours, and her problems included high bilirubin, problems eating, and trouble maintaining her body temperature. She spent several days in the isolette, and a few days under photo therapy. She was fed my milk through an ng tube as we tried to learn how to nurse. I finally decided to feed her my milk by bottle (she did learn to latch at 5 weeks). She's now a happy, healthy 4 1/2 month old (3 month adjusted).

Hope my story helps you...and good luck!

Bella was born 33 weeks/2 days weighing in at 4lb 5oz and 18" long.... She was born via emergency c section due to a severe placental abruption...I did not receive steroid shots as time did not allow for it! She was breathing room air since birth and did not need oxygen support at any point. She spent 18 days in the NICU growing, learning to eat etc. The only issue she had was maintaining blood sugar levels - due to the distress she was in...she used all stores to fight to live long enough for them to get her out! She is now a feisty, happy, sweet one year old little girl and is the light of my life! Wishing you the very best!!!

My little man was born at 33w4d. He was 5lbs 2oz & 18.5 inches long (pretty big for that GD). I had PROM and very quickly went into labor and delivered. They did give me the steroid shot, but only a few hours before I delivered, so it probably did not have time to take effect.

When he was born, he was breathing and crying (I was SO relieved!), but he did have a little trouble filling his lungs with air and started to grunt, so he needed CPAP for a day or two and then the nasal canule for another day or so to pressurize the air in his lungs (he was on room air). Apparently, this is very common, as the lungs are the last organ to develop.

He also had jaundice for a little over 2 weeks and was anemic for a few months, both due to a combination of prematurity and blood type incompatability (I had the Rhogam shot, but there is still a "hangover" effect). He was in the hospital for 3 weeks: one week in the regular Level III NICU, and another 2 weeks in the "Transitional" NICU learning how to eat and getting over his jaundice.

Once he was released from the hospital, he started gaining weight quickly and really thrived! Actually, the first time he got sick was last week, and it only lasted a couple days. He was behind in his gross motor milestones at 6 months and his doctor diagnosed him with low muscle tone, which is a little more common in preemies, even later term ones. We had Early Intervention come out to our house, but by the time they came, he was no longer behind on his milestones and they noted that his low muscle tone was more towards the low range of normal rather than abnormally low.

He is now 8 1/2 and is the most curious and active baby in the world! What he lacks in muscle tone he makes up for in energy and determination, because he is now crawling all over the house, and pulls up to a kneel on everything. I think he might be close to standing, although he still looks a little unsure of his footing. Sometimes I look back at his pics from when he was in the NICU, and I get teary about how far he has come... he is just such an awesome little boy!

Sorry that was long, I just love talking about my little guy (sometimes a little too much :X). I think my words of advice would be to just take it one day at a time and focus on the positive. It is not always smooth sailing for 33-35 weekers, but generally, babies born at that gestational age often have some health issues at first, but tend to fair well in the long term without few (if any) serious health consequences. Good luck and keep us posted!

Just reread my post... to clarify, he is 8 1/2 months, not years, hehe.

hello i had prom at 30 weeks and i stayed at hospital for 3 weeks . my baby was born at 33 weeks and he just need oxygen for 2 days.. he had two episodes of apnea ( they forget to breathe) and it was very scary!! he stayed at the nicu for 1 week ( jaundice, feeding issues) then he was transfer to the nursery for 5 days to improve his feeding.. he came home at 35 weeks.. the only issue was the feeding for a couple of days it was so hard for him .. after that he had a normal development.. the only issue is that he has asthma.. he is 2 years now doing great.. he is not talking at all but i hope he will improve.. good luck
