On to rehab

The following day I was told that there was nothing else this hospital could do except continue with the steroid treatment and that a rehab facility would be the next step. I had no idea where to go since I never had to deal with anything like this before. Another thing I noticed was that I was having trouble focusing. It was then that I remembered what the Dr. said as he was preparing to inject the dye into my spinal cord. “getting too much of the dye into the brain can do some very bad things such as blindness or even death”. My heart started to race as I thought the worst. But, as the day progressed my eyesight didn’t get any poorer so I stopped worrying for the time being. That afternoon my father and Shelley stopped by. My dad told me he had some good news. Since he was a graduate of NYU he had some pull and was able to get me a bed at the Rusk Institute, one of the best rehab centers in the country and maybe even the world. He told me that at first he was told that there was about a one year waiting list. But after he spoke to the person in charge and explained my situation and his affiliation with the school the wait went from over a year to one week. Although I was still in some shock about the whole thing I was still coherent enough to realize just what a wonderful opportunity it was. I would be going to New York City to an acclaimed rehab center. A few days went by and I noticed my vision was getting noticeably worse. Not only was my vision a bit out of focus but I was beginning to detect a bit of double vision especially when I was tired. I started to get very concerned about losing my sight. That was something I really couldn't even imagine. Being unable to walk was one thing but having to deal with that and blindness was just not acceptable. I was going to let my doctor know the next day. When I awoke the next morning I was told that Rusk had an opening and I would be transferred that very day! I guess I could wait until I got to Rusk to have my vision checked. After all, I didn’t want anything to delay the start of my rehabilitation.
