Who Cares

I have had to use the assistance of a home care aids for the past twenty years. Throughout this time there was alot of abuse by my caregivers. They came in my home and slept on the job, stole things and for the most part were very disrespectful. Wher I live this is becomming a problem. No one should ever have to be affaid of a person who is sent to your home. Am I the only one who has experienced this.

I tried to post earlier to this but it must have got hung up on this dinosaur computer. As a care giver I care... This has been my work for over 20 years. I have seen just what you mention on shift changes. Care givers sleeping. Being rude to their client. It urks me. I turned in a company I worked for as they hired nothing but uneducated people who didn't care about anything but a pay check. The company was shut down but like all the dregs of society they resurfaced with another name. I am sorry you have had to go through this. It scares me... I have not returned back to work since my son's SCI in Feb,09 out of fear of just this. Someone mistreating him or not helping him properly.

Before he was hurt I did talk to people about hiring caregivers and told them you have to do everything you can to find out all you can about the people who come into your home. Background checks need to be at least 5 references and you need to call all of them. Companies you need to check to see if complaints were made against them in the past. Talking to the caregiver and telling them what you expect and if they can't follow your rules request a different one.

At one point I even told one gal to fudge a little and tell people coming in due to past abuse that the house is set up with monitoring equipment... if that is possible get the house set up with it. You can get cheap kits that are very hide-able and have family install it.

Abuse of the disabled is getting worse all over. With the economy the way it is many companies are struggling so they hire anyone... experience you have to pay more non you can get by with paying the minimum. So they hire anyone and send them out to endanger people's lives.

Hi Michelle,

Thank you for the kind words, but I have already started fighting back. I have started an organization. It is called Compassions Training & Awareness Center. at Compassions our Mission is to train a more self sufficient, compassionate, and knowledgable caregiver. We will make sure that all caregivers are properly trained not just in the field of the elderly but, individuals with special needs, SCI. We will make sure of the references, Background checks will be maintained and kept current. We will also do drug testing. As for now we are a non-profit who has their 501c3 but the problem is people do not think it is a not a need for a safer alternitive to home care aids. So no one is willing to give funding I have been working on this for over five years. I may be down but I am not out. If this approch does not work I will re-arange thing and do it a different way. I won't give up and don't you worry. I will make this thing happen. We all must stand up and make all aware that this is a problem.
