Urinary Tract Infection

0 Recommendations

Hello All,

I had a hemorrage to my T-4 about 10 years ago. I get chronic UTI's. I have grown resistant to oral antibiotics. I have a small bladder only holding 300 CC-white male. The Dr has recomended Bladder augmentation. My question is 2 part. Besides taking Cranberry pils and Vitamen C is there something else that someone can recomend. I probably had 60-70 UTI over this 10 year period.

2nd Part-Are there people out there that have had bladder augmenation? Has it been sucessful? What is it like to go through with this? How long does it keep you down?

Sincerely,

Dave

Surgery

Hi, I have a question Dave. Are you using an indwelling catheter like a foley catheter? If so, that may be the reason behind the UTI. My urologist recommended several years ago for me to have an augmentation but the thing is, he sent me to get a second opinion from a guy he studied with and the 2nd opinion I got was I didn't need the bladder augmentation, yet my urologist disagreed with that up one end and down the other. The 2nd doctor I saw that said I didn't need the surgery said my bladder can hold 12 ounces of liquid before having to be emptied which is a little more than 300cc and if you have a urinal bottle you may notice ounces on one side of the bottle which should show that 300cc equals 10-11 ounces of liquid. Cranberry pills are great for uti, but a couple more that you could look into but I wouldn't recommend it is apple cider vinegar + water mixture or baking soda and water mixture. And if you can get a 2nd opinion. Good luck.

Matt,

Thanks for the response. I self cath no indwelling nor foley catheter. Do you get many UTI's?

Dave

Dave,
Are you washing your hands with antibacterial soap before you do your ICU? They say that is the number one reason for getting a UTI. You need to drink plenty of water, G2 (gatorade low calorie), and/or cranberry juice to flush your system.
I say the above as I just sat in on a problem solving class and yesterday an advance bladder care class. I am currently attending the day program at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. It is one of the nation's top SCI rehab centers.
I had really bad UTI that got into my kidneys and I spent 5 days in the hospital, but it took about 2 months to get rid of the UTI. Until I got saw a new urologist who put me on macrodontin. That cleared me up and I took it everyday for 3 yrs and then started having UTIs again.
I agree with Matt that you should get the second opinion before having the surgery.
good luck!

Hi Dave,
So nice to hear from you. Sorry, I can't answer your question.

I had flu-like symtoms for over a week and ended up back in the ICU again for a week only to learn after four days of testing that I had a Kidney Stone blocking my left Kidney completely. Man did I ever feel terrible . . . and I am now totally out of shape. I get another CAT scan today and hopefully they will remove the stone and stint on Monday.

I'll say a prayer for you!

As always,
Jim

Hi Dave I'm Tim or quadyame I've been a quad for over 9yrs. now. I use to get up to 4 UTI's a yr. Then I found out about Manose well you get it at a health food store. What it dose is goes into the blader and the bacteria sticks to the Manose and you pee it out more or less. Go online just put Manose pick a site and it tells you this but in bigger words. I've used Manose for about 2yrs. now well over 1yr. I ran out of Manose for about 5 days and I got a UTI. You might not need to have surgery but go online and it will tell you all about thatt surgery. I suppose you have a supperpubic cath. just cos your bladder is small it emties more. So I take 1 tab 3 times a day of manose, you may need more. Good luck Dave and still take your cranberry you can try 100% purue juice.
Tim

I sure hope this D-Mannose works I just ordered a bottle, I get about 10 UTI's a year and is really tough when being new back to work, so I am finally glad to try something different because the doc didn't seem to care enough.
