Sweating below your injury site

I have a question, when Matt first got hurt they told us he would not sweat below his spinal cord injury. Now when he first got hurt the swelling in his cord was high up to T-6.. upon leaving the hospital it was around T-10. They were right he didn't sweat but when he was sick he got goose bumps below the injury level in a disreflexic kinda way he got very icky feeling but no sweating we could mark. Even upon working out he would not sweat at all.

All of a sudden today he was sweating like a pig, his legs his back his butt .. during his work out. The PT said to him "Your not going disreflexic on me are you"... Matt said I feel great. He finnished his work with her and went on to weight lifting and still felt good and did great... but worked up a soaking sweat.

My thoughts are.."could he be getting more back"..."could it be a disreflexic attack but one that just caused sweating"? I don't know.. any one else have this happen or any thoughts on the issue?

New medications are working good.. maybe this could be helping him more?..

I am 2 yrs post injury I am a T-5, I recently started sweating, at the end of the day my feet are soaked, and my butt and trunk are sweating at night i asked my doctor about it he took my shoe off and started pokeing around and said "can you feel that" I was suprised by his reaction. Of course I could"nt feel it but it did give me hope. He said it could be a beginning of function return and time would tell. So I say every little bit is a stride forward. Have a great day. Beth

matt does have feeling all over and now can feel pin pricks on his toes....his injury is now a little over 6 months old. thank you for your reply it does sound hopeful.

hello - my nick all of a sudden started to sweat, behind the knees, socks are wet when we take off the shoes - etc.. we were told the same thing... i emailed our neuro dr. whom i would entrust my life with, he agreed, it could be something, also that it couldnt hurt...... nick had his sci the day before he was born, he just turned 4, so it took about 3 years to happen for him...... we will take it....
thanks much

Hi,
I hope and trust Matt's sweating is a sign of many coming improvements. But just in case...
As a precaution please encourage him to check his body for any possible pressure problems. I've learned that if I'm sweating, something is wrong (pain, pressure issue on foot or rear, infection). When my right ankle was busted, I sweated excessively (8-10 shirts a day) strictly on my left side.
I'm a C5-6 so hopefully this is just a case of comparing apples to oranges.

Definatley it is something we are watching, So far it has only happened during his work out. We go back to Therapy tomorrow afternoon so we will see what happens then and try to figure out what triggers it or if its just a good work out sweat... I worry about him breaking his ankle.. now that his meds are kicking in good he has lots of toe movement on the right side and a little on the left.. but the ankles are kinda floppy. I worry when he moves his feet off his chair sometimes his ankle twists to the side in an un-natural position. Really wish they had made him AFO's he could wear all the time to help with them.

Thanks you all for your info.

if you THINK he should have AFO's then INSIST that he have them. These PT's are so intense on getting folks up and walking they forget the joints are not as sturdy with muscle/ tendons as the able bodied who can tighten the joints....for us, its a gravity thing and whatever tension is provided by the impaired muscles. Sure we might be able to swing the legs into position to walk and put weight on them, but like you said, a floppy ankle is NOT a good thing. Roll it ovfer and he'll have an injury that was VERY preventable and you'll be kicking yourself. Don't get so thrilled that he's up and about that you (like some PT"s) forget to be safe.

Has the sweating occured w/ a urinary infection? My spasms have been pretty bad lately & now I've started sweating a lot( about a month). The last 2days the sweating is mainly on my left side-this having not been the case before. The sweat just rolls-I feel disgusting! Do you happen to have any "magic" cures for a UTI?
