seeking for a wheelchair

1 Recommendation

hi everyone!

as some of you know, i work with physically challenged adults and kids

one of this kids, with cerebral palsy, had a wheelchair which one of the wheels broked.

he had to go back to the wheelchair he used when he was 6 years olds and now he is 13... so you can imagine how uncomfy he is.

just a simple, plain , old fashioned wheelchair here would cost around 500 american dollars... the same ones that in the states would cost 150...

this riders family live with his grandmother... in a very poor financial situation... and i was wondering if any of you would know about a foundation or something similar that would donate a wheelchair... he doesnt need a new one, just a bigger one where he can be sitting comfy..

we cant buy it online, because in our country anything bought online that cost more than 50 dollars will have almost the same amount on taxes...!!!

so if you know any place that would donate this and be able of sending it as a "gift" (thats the only way we wont get taxes) please let me know...

thank you very much.

take care and smile!

You mention you are not in the U.S., what Country are you in? I will see what I can do. I don't want to get your hopes up, but I will surely try. I just need to know where it is going if I were to send it!

I live in Iowa and im planning a 3month trip to spend time with Mariana in Uruguay,South America mid feb-mid may. If no options are found to get a chair shipped there sooner, maybe i can travel with it as if it were mine if i had it by mid feb. cause i dont travel with my chair.

There is a Christian ministry to the disabled called Joni and Friends which was started by a quad named Joni Earickson Tada. They may be able to help you. You can find them on the web at joniandfriends.org.

There is another Christian organization that gives away wheelchairs. It has provided some around the world.

Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC) in Atlanta GA. www.fodac.org
770-491-9014

Chri Brand is the executive director. If you talk to him directly, tell him Marie Latta suggested you call.

Just an interesting sidenote... Joni and Friends is on the west coast (CA) and FODAC is near the east coast (Atlanta GA).

Cheers for life, breath, and community of friends. Marie

Is the wheelchair its self in good condition? If so, which wheels need to be replaced? It may be easier get and ship just the wheels.

hi DLV, the wheelchair is in good condition but ive been told that shipping a wheel or a whole new wheelchair would be almost the same cost besides the wheelchair model is a japanese one, thats not easily found in the states cause its kinda old fashioned.. thats why i thought it would be easier to just try and find a new wheelchair.. i started my search for a wheel , but i couldnt even find the brand in google... so...
i will try find a whole wheelchair... somewhere there or we will find it here.. although the high cost...
if nothing pops up before tuesday.

thank you for your suggestion

Hi Mariana,
I have a couple of used wheelchairs in good condition. They are Bob Hall chairs who has gone out of business but they use mostly invacare components witch are easy to get. I know he is omly 16 but I am fairley small. Could you tell me what size seating he will need and approx. distance from under his knee to the bottom of his foot while in a seated postion?
Thanks,
Jay K.

Mariana,
Also I forgot to mention these are self propel only. They have no push handles.
