Paralyzed 1 year 12-8-09 and feels pain?????

0 Recommendations

Can anyone explain why my son felt so much pain last
night in his lower abdomen and lower back from a urinary tract infection. He is supposed to be paralyzed
T-7 down. He told me he also has had his feet burning
and throbbing and has felt hot and cold on his thigh.
Is this something to get excited about. To me anyone
feeling is better than No feeling.

We wonder the same thing. My son was injured in May (T4) and could actually feel the urge to pee when he had a urinary tract infection. He also has tingling in his feet a lot of the time. The doctor says the tingling is because his spinal cord is damaged and is "confused". We are with you though - feeling something is better than feeling nothing!

HI , when my daughter is sick she feels pain as well. I think it has more to do with how much our bodies are connected. Sometimes the pain manifests itself in different ways as well... for instance she can have shivers and headaches as well as pain in her low back... which she cannot feel with any bladder infections... I have what is called nueropathic pain in my legs. and feet. Unfortunatly, it isn't anything to get excited about. It is similar to phantom pain which is what people feel when they have a limb amputated. I still have no feeling in my legs, just the sensation of pain. It doesn't seem fair.....no feeling except for pain.

pistol has it right, neuropathic pain can be the burning sensation, and it can be the searing pain that causes mild discomfort to unbearable pain. Dont all the symtoms of neuro pain, but it aint fun. The hurt from the UTI seems to be a real serious matter. What concerns me here is possible kidney trouble. Either kidney stones or kidney infection are terribly painful. Be careful here, as it may be nothing, or may be something bad. The sensation of hot and cold on thigh...this can be a great thing. Headaches and shivers can be a sign of AD....watch for blood pressure issues.

Thanks everyone for the replies to the pain my son was feeling so much
the other night. It scared me thinking it was a sign of AD
so he went to the emergency room. They ran tests and said he did have a
bladder infection. He was in so much pain he was in tears.

I am a T6 Complete since 03/24/07. I'm not supposed to feel anything below my breast bone. I am presently suffering from a UTI witch I have had for a while now. I am feeling some severe pain in my abdomen, legs ect.. where I don't even feel like moving and my spasms are going crazy. I was begining to think I was the only one. I don't know what causes the feeling but I know it hurts.
Thanks,
Henry

I can not explain why. I can tell you many doctors says pain is the 1st feeling to come back. My sons left leg is paralyzed as of 8-5-08. He has major night pain in his leg. Our hope is that it is his leg getting better but he may have pain for the rest of his life... doctors say. We have yet to see what god says *wink*

unfortunately lower back pain goes hand-in-hand with urinary tract infections. I am C4 quadriplegic for 11 years now and I have a lot of spasticity and pain in my lower back when I have an infection. I'm no doctor but in my experience no matter what your physician says the truth is that there is no such thing as no feeling. As time has gone by I have learned to read the signs differently because my body as a new way of communicating. For burning in the legs I take a drug called gabapentin. it works okay. Shivers and headaches are most definitely a sign of autonomic dysreflexia. There is a capsule I take called Procardia. I break the capsule and let the contents of it rests under my tongue for about 30 seconds. It works wonders. It takes a couple minutes to kick in but it does work to relieve the dysreflexia. There is also an inhalant that provides immediate relief but I will have to talk to my friend and get the name of it. He is a quadriplegic as well. I am sorry for your son's troubles and I hope this helps. I know the frustration of not being able to isolate the source of your pain.

im a t7 incomplete i feel pain everyday and the fact is it can be minimize just a notch down or two. i feel the burning, hot and cold, back pain etc... christoper reeve booklet tells it that pain become our freind, we will get use to it but where it counts is MENTALLY. its tough but my sore of peace is my spirituality with GOD and i live day by day through my physical and mentally being trying to achive my goals... I would say excersise and move on and hope for the best is all we can do!
GOD BLESS,
sammy

also just to remind the sci.... COLD WEATHER stay covered well, it does makes the nerves burn more, AC in home too. i use a fan in my room in the summer

I am a T-12 complete since 7/6/06 (my birthday), and I have pain 24/7. I used to take pain meds, but all they did was make me sleep 18 hours a day. Not good. I view the pain as a good thing. It's the body's central nervous system being confused. I'm hopeful I can prove all my doctors wrong. Only time will tell. As sad as this sounds, I am glad I have this venue to learn about fellow paras. It's nice to know I am not alone in my pain. God bless each and every one of you!

I am a C4 Central Cord Syndrome, incomplete for 14months. I am so far seem to be lucky for I am a walking Quad on forearm crutches. At first I felt nothing below the neck, then burning in hands worse at night. Helped with gabapentin (Neurontin). Now I feel when EMS pads are pulled from my leg hairs, not normal but sensation. I like to think of it as an awakening. I do believe physical therapy and excercise helps...produces natural endorphins. I know I am lucky never had AD and could urinate just before I left inpatient rehab. Hoping in future to have this imaginary duct tape that is wrapped from my nipples to my toes is removed. Wish you all success in your goals and treatments. I hope research finds answers to the complexity of this type injury.
