Don't give up.

If your nephew's injury was a gunshot wound to the spinal column, it may take more than just good therapy, but good therapy should help him maintain his muscles until the science has caught up. And science is getting very close. That was Christopher Reeve's approach. Here is an interesting link to his history.
http://historicalbiographies.suite101.com/article.cfm/christopher_reeve_and _spirituality .

Science may not be far off from having the technology your nephew needs to walk again, even with a gunshot wound to the spinal column. There are two technologies out there that hold out a lot of hope for this type of injury, and they seem both to be at the verge of being ready to go.

The first it the one the injury specialists in Israel told Christopher Reeve that they felt would be available within a couple years (and that was 2004). That is a technology where they use a polymer bridge, imbedded with stem cells. See the comments toward the bottom of the article at:
http://www.editinternational.com/read.php?id=47ddbb42c6178

The other is a new one, that has been going through various levels of political wrangling, infighting, etc, but which finally looks like it has gotten to a point where they are almost ready to start the first human trials. In that technology, they also use a type of polymer, but they inject this one, and it sounds like that method does not use stem cells or anything else which could cause a negative reaction. The interesting thing about that product is that the driving force, and major ownership, and much of the control behind the project, rests in the hands of people with SCI, so they have a vested interest in getting the technology up and running as soon as they can.

A description of the technology is at:
http://www.neurogelenmarche.org/index.php/en/neurogel-/neurogel-the-product .html

And pictures of the spinal column after the product is insterted in test animals (with a section of the spine actually cut out), and after recovery, are at:
http://www.neurogelenmarche.org/index.php/en/neurogel-/macroscopy.html

An interesting film of one of the early experiments wiht the technology is at:
http://www.neurogelenmarche.org/index.php/en/neurogel-/scientifc-results.ht ml

And they have a good grasp of the issues involved with most SCI situations, with typical injuries in humans being crush type injuries (though their initial experiments actually removed portions of the spinal column in the test animals - which is why, if it works at all [as it sounds like it should], it should work even for something like gunshot wound to the spine):
http://www.neurogelenmarche.org/index.php/en/neurogel-/compression-model.ht ml

They also have a good description of the spinal column and it and the nerves operate, but this is in French only right now:
http://www.neurogelenmarche.org/index.php/divers/la-moelle-epiniere.html
To read this in English you have to go to something like bablefish.yahoo.com and put in the URL (the web address), and you need to have two screens open - one with the French version and the pictures, and one with the English translation.
