Moving states

1 Recommendation

My brother currently lives in Texas and I live in California. He is not doing well in Texas and I want to move him to Cali with me but don't know how to go about moving all of his benefits and such. I was just wondering if anyone has advice on how to best handle this matter. Thanks!

If he is on Medicaid, he will have to move and establish residency in CA for at least 30 days before he can apply for Medi-Cal, and then it will take several more weeks at least before he is eligible. He would also have to apply for IHSS after the same waiting period and then have an in-home evaluation by an IHSS social worker to see if he is eligible for attendant care, and for how much. If he is on Medicare already, then that is not dependent upon a state and he just continues to use it. For SSI or SSDI, he will have to notify them that he is moving, and the amount he gets (if for SSI) may be adjusted for where he lives. CA does not have the benefits that he may be getting from Texas DOR so he cannot depend upon those.

So one must check each state for Medicaid/Medicare benefits even if they already have them in the state they are currently living in?

That's why I like this forum, as one brain cannot think of everything.

Thanks Fuschia for your knowledge.

Medicaid (Medi-Cal in CA) yes, Medicare no. He would have had to be disabled for at least 24 months an on SSI or SSDI to qualify for Medicare, but once he gets it, as long as he is eligible, it continues from state to state. Medicare is a federal program. Medicaid is a state funded that is partially state funded but entirely state administered.

Wow, thanks so much for the information everyone! I am really going to research all this stuff before making the move. I would love to have him with me though so I can make sure he is getting the proper care he so deserves that he is not getting now. Thanks again!

This link has information about all progams in CA for people with disabilities:

This is also an excellent site for those in CA:
