I need some help for my family

0 Recommendations

I have recently looked into getting some help redoing the bathroom in our home so I can get in and out. Right now i have no way of doing this, I shower by an inflatible tub that sits on my bed. this helps but still we need some help in locating some type of help in fixing up the house so I can get in and out. If you know of anything that MAY help then it is worth a try

I don't know if Missouri is one of the few states that offer partial funding of home modifications, but you could find out by contacting your local ILC. They should also know about any other local charities that might help out with this. In my area, occasionally we are able to get a group of men called the "Good Guys" to do jobs like this, although we can't depend on it for everyone. Have you tried your church or other organizations? Friends or family in construction who would give you a discount? Have you contacted contractors to get an estimate?

Is it just a door widening that is needed? That is not extremely expensive in most cases. Until you can get something done, you might want to consider using an armless office chair to get into the bathroom. You can transfer to this, then have someone help push you into the bathroom, then transfer to the toilet and/or tub, and reverse this to get out. It is not as good as getting through the door, but better than having to take sponge baths.

...I'm in a wheelchair myself, and am living with my folks. Their house is not very accessible either. They had to take the doors off my room and the bathroom. I'm paraplegic, so they got me a shower chair that i just transfer on too. They got it at Walmart for like $40. bucks. Also there are groups out there that can modifie, some government, some volunteer. Just look on your city or county's web page. Hope that helps, good luck.

Have you tried vocational rehabilitation?

You could also check with your church or a local Lions Club. Maybe they could do a little fund rasier for the modifications needed. I have a friend that was able to get his parents house completely redone to make it accessible through their Lions Club. I've also had a ramp built by my wifes church group for free.

This is a link where you can find information about state resources, including ILCs, advocacy, etc.,

The Council for Disability Rights also offers a list with information about funding sources:

Good luck!

Have you checked with www.paralysis.org information specialists as they can give you resources that are available in your area for help?

Depending on what part of Missouri you live in, depends on what help is available. We live in Franklin County, so many St. Louis organizations won't help us. There is only one FC organization that I've found that helps with home modifications and that's Heartland Independent Living in Owensville and they service three counties with one 3-man volunteer team to do all the work that needs to be done.
In St. Louis there are several organizations to choose from one being paraquad, which is supposed to be very helpful and can direct you to other resources.
