I have a Question of a sensitive nature

Hemroids, at what point should you go to a Dr to have them looked at when your paralyzed? Is it safe to just treat them with Preperation H and witch hazel pads on your own to heal. These have open sores and are very swollen and are external and internal. He cant feel the pain in them but his body seems to react to it. Any advice would be appreciated I have NEVER seen a hemroid like these. He got them I am sure from straining when going to the bathroom. His Dr is out of town for another week and I am worried and want to make sure the sores don't get bigger. Curious if they are as hard to heal as bed sores?

Anything with sores need to be looked at right away.. you cannot see far into the rectum and that just makes it scary.. infectious agents, if involved in the sores can really multiply quickly and become systemic... This is just a note from another mom.... not a medical opinion...

Soaking in water lying with legs elevated should help. If they are very dark purple they maybe thrombosed usually painful if you have sensation. The constipation may make them worse but hemorrhoids do not usually get infected like bedsores they have a very rich blood supply. I certainly think if he is not running a fever if there is no pus, he can have a BM and is not in much pain you can wait until the doc who knows him returns from vacation.

By the way if he is having some pain taking the Tuck's pads and putting them in the freezer helps and ask your doc for Anusol HC cream or suppositories.

this has one white swollen almost like a knot.. hard to to the touch but he has two what looks like fissures right under it and right to the side that look kinda deep. (thinking he may have injured himself stimulating... referencing photos some hemroids do look like this I just don't want them getting infected. He isn't running a fever. I have him on his belly right now as he had his shorts folded under him and doesn't do pressure lifts like he should and has a crease in his skin (pressure mark) from one end of his butt check to the hip. This is a hard age to have injured.. 15 almost 16 and think they know it all. But if something goes wrong its always someone elses fault.. I will ask about the cream and we are using the medicated wipes and Preperation H .. this has taken some of the swelling out of the area. Thank you all for the info!!

Here is a site with a resource that maybe helpful in what to do for you son. http://www.craighospital.org/InfoResources/adviceNurse.asp It is a SCI nurse advice line. I have never used it, but it was listed on one of my favorite resource sites for SCI info http://www.spinalcord.uab.edu/. Under education & training you will find secondary issue videos that you can watch online free or purchase the disks. They cover 11 subjects. The wound one may have something on it that is helpful. I was looking to get the site when I found the nurse advice. I hope you find the nurse advice line helpful. Let us know.
I have had problems with hemorrhoids too and found that baby wipes helped reduced the swelling. I think it is the aloe in them. I used them for cleaning, so was using them regularly. I now get some adult wipes delivered through my community long term care. With regular use he may be able to avoid them or at least stop them from getting bad.

Just an addendum, I spoke with the rehab dept and they also work with wounds. They have seen abscesses in the past with those that have paralysis..

I like the idea of the baby wipes with the aloe. I wish you success in the healing process and of course prevention is always key...
