Forgetfullness

0 Recommendations

I am forgetfull. Part of it is due to short term memory loss. This morning like many others I couldn't remember what day it was for the life of me. I got up and looked on the computer finally to find out. Actually my memory is lots better. If mom can't remember, she asks me.
I play brain games on the computer to help with improvement. I read books too. Right now I'm reading the cat who saw stars. My question is, what do you all do to keep your mind fit and active? I'm doing pretty good dispite the brain damage. As my parents say, "I thought you were the one with the head injury! Somedays my mind is real sharp. I just wish they could fix the conection from my brain to the rest of my body! Oh I already go to games for the brain.com and another sites like that.

Memory Depression Stroke

Hey Goldy, I think it will get better, I forgot my nephews name, and also the next door neighbors, which I knew for 10 yrs., so don't feel bad, I had my stroke 3 yrs. ago and things do get better, as I'm sure with you. Steve H.

I know there's plenty of room for improvement. I just wondered if anyone has any new techniques for improving mentally that I have not heard of.

My injury was 23 yrs ago.

Just do your best every day. It's good to want to get better, as long as you keep working and stay positive along the way. I know from your posts that you do both, so you are doing a GREAT JOB!
I think it's fun that you get to joke about the forgetfulness with your parent....... You can definitely be yourself at home. In my extended family, we have disabilities of all sorts, and no one is immune to some teasing at times, for things "outsiders" might cringe at.... but humor keeps us going here and all are welcome, especially if they can take a light-hearted look at themselves and others.
Do you best .....FORGET the rest! hehehehehehe!

Hi Goldy, my daughter has the same problems as well. She does the brain games and sudoku. She makes lists and that helps her with the day to day. She also has reminders plugged into her cell phone... I don't even know how to do that!
After her coma, she was confused about so much. For the first 2 years she was awake for only short periods of time... maybe 1 or 2 good hours. One thing though was that she knew her name.... but thought she was 4 years younger. One thing that made me feel better was that has alot of her long term memory. She remembers her childhood and how much fun she had with her sistes. She remembers all of us and I am so happy she remembers her family. Your family sounds wonderful as well. Memory is such a tricky thing. I hope you remember all of the good times with your family... all the new memories you have as you experience life... One thing for sure, I appreciate your being open and sharing your experiences and challenges. Take care

Hi Goldy,

Going along with what Patricia was saying, I would see about maybe buying some find-a-word puzzle books and things of that nature, also crossword puzzle and sudoku books just for when you're not on the computer in spare time. Take care

I got a puzzle book called puzzles for bigger kids. I have been having fun doing that. Mom and I worked on a cross word puzzle. I used to do those fun pads all the time. Oh I cracked a code yesterday!

I agree! Most definately! I laugh at myself all of the time. I think that I should just check my e-mail and play brain games and do more constuctive stuff online. I heard computers suck the energy out of you.

Yup! My long term memory is better than my short. when I needed to learn something for a test, I had to commit it all to long term memory. I used to write stuff over and over but I'm better at that now. I'm off to work on a puzzle!

i also have a problem being forgetful sometimes, i think it's because at those events i am preoccupied with many thoughts. whether i am not busy and a bit relaxed i still at times forget something or do something stupid due to this.sometimes i am really dissapointed at myself with this, but i just think of it that as human beings, we often or sometimes fall short to the things which we expects ourselves.

There is one little device which may be worth looking at. It is a simple little electro-stimlation device that gets the brain operating better by stimulating it to communicate better. It is called a "Brain Tuner". The technology is called cranio-electrical stimulation. It is produced by a company out of Canada, Sota Instruments, who legally can make very few claims for it because of regulatory requirements. More is on the internet about it. This unit was designed by Robert Beck in the 1980's to help get people over adiction and help with depression, based on technology that had been around for years. He just tweaked the settings to help them work more effectively, and to work on more people. It has also helped with concentration, and has been used with some of the super-learning programs. The normal price for the unit is about $200 US, but one place out of Florida (www.braintuner.com) sells the unit for $175 US (that is the lowest price I've seen for it). I know it has helped my concentration some days, and I don't have a brain injury. I understand that where there are more things to help, it has done more than I've had a chance to experience. At first, in some of the studies, they thought it actually increased intelligence. Eventually what they found out was that what it does is that it helps the brain communicate better, reducing the fuzzyness and some of the lack of concentration.

If you decide to try it, you'll need to experiment with the settings for what works for you. What I use to help my concentration is the two modes that run the Schuman (earth frequency) frequencies, modes 3 and 6. For other things you'd want to try some of the other frequencies. They suggest starting with setting 1, and experimenting from there. For a great talk by Robert Beck on the technology behind the Brain Tuner, recorded in 1983 (you can listen to it on the site, or download it from the site) at: http://altered-states.net/barry/newsletter333/index.htm. They also have the recording on the www.braintuner.com site, at the bottom of their page, but that version is harder to work. The altered-states.net page has some info on the brain tuner, but operates from N.Z. and sells it for $195 US. They also have a simplified, less expensive, device, but for the price difference I would suggest getting the real Brain Tuner with more frequencies and more advanced technology.
