My doctor wants me to get a pump I really dont know that much about it and I want to know does the procedure hurt. I also want to know if people benefit from it. Please let me know all the important information about it. Also how can I get help to get a adjustable bed non-hostipal bed because I have a hostipal now but i have a 2 year old son who sleeps with me so I need more room a bigger bed for the both of us.
You can get a lot of information about baclofen pumps from the Medtronic's website. You might also want to do a search under "baclofen pump" at www.carecure.org as there have been many discussions there over the years from others with SCI.
I don't know of any insurances that will purchase or rent a non-hospital adjustable bed, since these are seen as a convenience item, not a medical necessity. Your best bet would probably be to purchase one used. I see them listed on Craig's List all the time, so I would suggest starting there.
Before I had one, my spasms were real bad! I took orally the highest dosage you could take, and I still had them! I got one after watching a video that my doctor had me watch, and no, the procedure didn't hurt, but you better have good insurance! They don't give them away. Mine cost $31,000! For not having spasms, its been worth it though (in my mind). I guess that's the price of technology!
Im A 35 year old T-4 para.For the first 2 years of my injury,I had such horrible spasms.So many times I would just be sitting in my wheelchair and my legs would raise straight up.and start jerking back and forth so bad that it would throw me backwards out of my chair.My Doctor sent me to The Ohio State University to get the Baclofen pump.It is not painful at all,they put you to sleep for the whole thing.To make A long story short,it was the best thing that my Doctors have done for me in the 13 years since my injury.NO spasms at all.
