Antibiotics and blood sugar

0 Recommendations

Is it possible for an antibiotic to cause your blood sugar to be extremely high? I ask because I had to be put on Amoxicillin for an infection last week and since being on it my blood sugar in the morning time has ranged anywhere from 300 to 500 even after taking my blood sugar medicine before bed the night before.

The answer is "yes", antibiotics MIGHT affect blood sugar, either positively or negatively, depending on the type of antibiotic and your body's response. Sickness itself apparently also affects blood sugar levels, so if the antibiotic is not the cause, the sickness it is being taken for might be. When your body is going thru times of stress, it pulls different nutrients and other things from the blood, using them to try to battle the problem.
