Are you going to school so you can get a good job eventually? You can do a lot of that on-line so that you can maintain the bedrest you need to heal your pressure ulcers.
If you work for money you risk loosing your SSI and Medicaid, so unless you can get a full-time well paying job that has great medical benefits you would be unwise to work part-time. Don't try to hide income either...they always find out eventually and you could end up paying back your SSI, paying a fine, and even risking jail time for Medicaid fraud.
How about getting a roommate to help reduce what you have to pay for rent? Are you getting Food Stamps? Using a food bank? Are you already in Section 8 housing (if not, you should apply)?
You should definitely apply for food stamps. As to Section 8, good luck! In many states you can't even apply -- they are so overwhelmed that they aren't taking applications. Then, the waiting list is years long. My son, Patrick, has been discharged from rehab and tried to get Section 8 -- and was told it would be a long wait! So he and his father are trying to pay the rent in a small apartment. His Dad was laid off right around Patrick's injury and now is his caretaker and hasn't been able to go back to work.
My husband and I both have MS. Several years ago, thousands of Section 8 vouchers were cut, and ours was one of them. We struggle with both of us on disability, trying to pay rent and manage.
Wish you the best!!
A friend of mine sold Amway. I fill out surverys online at mysurvey.com. Eventually I'm supposed to get a check from them. Another online friend says that's how he gets extra income.

Hi,
I solved my money problems by leaving the city and moving to a rural area. I lived in Milwaukee, WI (pop. 700,000) for 35 years. At the time (14 years ago) my income was only $650 a month (SSDI). Rents were almost $400 a month for a roach-infested two room apartment.
Anyway I moved up north to a village with a population of 900. Rents were in the neighborhood of $150-200 a month for a decent apartment. Food costs, electric, gas, everything was less. True, for great medical care I have to drive 100 miles to the closest city (Green Bay, WI, pop. 60,000) but in my opinion the trade off was well worth it.
Hope this helps,
Bob

dear amanda;
i understand your frustration when you are trying to make ends meet when you are dealing with a disability..
--i'm surviving(can't really call this "living")on what ohio's welfare office considers assistance..$115.00 per month! the only way i survive is where i "speeded up" my section 8 wait time by living in my van-in their parking lot!..it kinda got their attention, and i only waited three months before i qualified..during a recent gap in housing,i tried it again, and was soundly chased away by the cops..this still confuses me,as helping people find a home is their job,and all i needed was a place to park my van for a few days!?!! i've found here in ohio, there are bearocracies with federal mandates that conflict with some of the local-concervative idea's..so what you get is a agency that LOOKS like one thing, but when you try to get the benefits from them, there are MANY roadblocks..despite my well documented spinal chord injury at c4-5,with a bone spur pressing on the chord(nearly the same injury christopher reeve had),i still cannot convince social security of my injury,..
..i don't get medicare,i'm on medsicaid..similar but there are diffrences..they do cover my meds, but getting a pair of glasses is infuriating, especially since everyone in ohio was FORCED into a h.m.o, these people fight me at every turn-from everything from my blood pressure med's,to my glasses..
sorry for going on and on,but-that's why i've adopted my username-windtalker..
--my best suggestion is to see what your caseworker has to say about other income..usually the goverment assistance programs frown on any kind of external income,..their thinking is if you are able to make money, then you aren't disabled..period..verry little leeway..
--so,i agree with some of the other people who have posted here,..unless this job has health care that will cover you,or pay enough where you can pay for your health care out-of-pocket,i'd be wary..those agencies-especially medicaid, have entire departments to investigate folks who think they are smarter than the system..
..i also understand 600 bucks doesn't go verry far these days..especially if rent and utilities come out of that..you'r best option might be to get hud-section 8 to cover the rent-and they also cover utilities under the H.E.A.P program..altho their requirements canbe a pain, where you gotta file during certain monts for certain things, like waiting till the end of the heating season-despite the shut off notices, because they will only wright one check per season..if you file too early, you gotta pay the diffrence..they pay the electric in the summer-so you don't hear of little old ladys with a window a/c unit, but won't turn iton-cause the bill would be too high, and die when the temp inside their house hits 100..with the insane profits the oil /gas/electric companies make these days,we should be taking better care of the poor..these programs are one way they are trying to take care of these people..but,you've gotta qualify..
--sounds like you are a dog person??..maybe getting involved with some animal rescue foundations might give you some creative outlets for your time and energy..be careful about getting attached to rescue animals,or you'll end up with a house full of them..two sounds like they keep you buisy enough!!
--one suggestion on the wound that's not healing..try using a GROW LIGHT!..i got mine at wally world..a 18 inch model for 10 bucks!..it's artificial sunlight, but helps me with winter depression, but getting some sunlight there might help it heal!!??..might be worth a try!..i use my sunlamp every day..i keep it next to the chair i watch t.v from..
hope it helps!
i am ganna try that lamp i guess it cant hurt ..when it comes to section 8 here in the baton rouge/new orleans area...hahahah yea right i have better luck learning how to fly..i call and they say o well we aint takin aps this month call back next month so i wait till the 1st at 9 am and i call they say we gave all the aps out we can im like wtf...i get so mad i cant do this with the income i have...this is so crazy how can a person live off 642 month i do have medicade and medicare and food stamps..i got my entergy bill in yesterday...omg almost 300$ i dont use nothing in my house but 1 window unit and a light ..i just dont kno ...i tried that online survey shit thats for the birds too it say free ...yeah free my ass u gottta use ur credit card n buy something before u get the money ..lol i spent 38 $ on "GRANT MASTER" lol found nothing that can help me ..i think im movin back to ohio least ill get section 8 ..
My daughter is taking courses so that she will one day not have to depend on assistance. As you have said it is impossible to live on. It is not going to get any better and so it makes sense. Even though she is a quadraplegic, she wants to be a kindergarten teacher. I admire her spirit and strength. She feels as if she has a second chance at life and wants to prove that it can be done. She also says to me she wants to somehow give back to society. She does have her down days but does not let it get her down. She uses the challenges to give her fuel to fight. I wish you well and it is good that you are thinking about income... I do think Fuscha is right about finding a way through education or work training to get out of the system somehow.... I wish you well, Patricia
