I wrote a book about my experience whith my paralysis. How I begun a new life how a mouth painter, writer and social fighter. I'm tetraplejic 9 years ago as Christopher Reeve was but I'm fighting for the live.

In my book I dedicated a chapter to Christopher an how he inspired me. This book titled "Útil y Victorioso" (Useful and Victorious) won a national award as the best book for disability people in my country and I'm working to publish it in english.

Italo, good to have you here, and welcome! Your english is amazingly good. I would never know that it is not your first language. I am going to explore your blog and googlepages now, but I will already tell you I am impressed by any artist, as I can barely draw a stick figure. No art talent at all here!

Eileen,

Thanks for your replay and for visit my site. In the future I'll make a page in english to reach more people.

God bless you

Sincerely

Italo (pronounced ee.ta.lo with "a" in California)

Hi Italo,

I am so glad that I found your posting. My Argentinian boyfriend had an accident a little over a year ago, he is a C-5 and is going through a depression. I sent him your webpages and told him about your book. Thank you for being an inspiration!

Hello Vitalo,

“Useful and victorious!” Nice phrase, inspiring; deep words sir. Yes, sometimes it’s easy to succumb to that feeling of being “useless and defeated.” Especially in the period just after we sustain a sci and begin to recognise that we have lost the independence and variety of choice in our everyday lives that we had when we were able bodied.

That’s the biggest battle we fight as new sci’s, the one in our minds. The mental struggle to convince ourselves, and sometimes even those around us, that we are still “useful and victorious” and that we do not simply exist to get under everyone’s feet and in everyone’s way. I’m definitely adding your line (“useful and victorious”) to my “pick-me-up" mantras list for those days when I am tempted to feel beaten down by life. It will have a place right up there with the Chris Reeve “Still ME.”

Did you paint before your injury? Look forward to visiting your site when you make a page in English.

Take care,

Tony.

Hi Tony,

Many thanks for your reply.

You are right, the phrase "Useful and Victorious!" has a big and deep significance. In Latin america is deepest because in this place of the world we fight against we ourselves but against all around.

Many people no have medicare, no family, no friends, no money, no proud, nothing, nothing, nothing.

That was my experience and now I'm working to say the world that is necessary to change collective behaviour because there many people dying without hope.

In this moment, Venezuela is developing very good changes. The President Chávez y workimg too hard to help people whith dissabilities and the National council for handicapped is doing importants political actions.

To respond your question: I was a technician in air conditioner repairing and I learn all I do today after my cord injury. I learn all without teacher to paint, to write, poetry, to use computer and all other habilities.

It was necessary because I was abandoned in a hospital as a man useless and defeat and no body believing in me. It is a long story to tell.

Ciao

Italo Violo
