Tubal ligations and lower incidence of ovarian cancer

0 Recommendations

I read recently that women who have tubal ligations have a significantly lower rate of ovarian cancer and they believe it produces some kind of protective process. I wish I had known that 20 years ago when I had my husband have a vasectomy and forewent the tubal. I might not be in these shoes now. I would be interested to know how many of you with ovarian cancer had tubal ligations or did not have tubal ligations. We could do our own little survey. I did not.

I had a tubal ligation at age 32 and partial hysterectomy at 35. Now at 62 I have been diagnosed recently with stage IIIc ovarian cancer.

My only thought too is for prevention for my daughters and loved ones and others. I don't think there is a known cause. I see people who live carefully and get cancer and people who live dangerously and live to their 90s. My husband's grandfather smoked like a chimney and died in his late 80s and my mother smoked and got small cell lung cancer. Who knows.

I had my three daughters at age 19, 21 and 27 and after the third daughter was born I had a tubiligation. According to statistics I should be the very last person on earth to get ovarian cancer. I just fall into all of the catagories that are considered safe and able to protect me against ovarian cancer per the RESEARCH EXPERTS........
BUT I did take HRT for 9 years in my 50's and I believe; there in lies the culprit.

Manuel I don't think we are doing this to beat ourselves up .I think we are doing this to find out the answers for our loved ones and friends and the girl who lives across town or across the world.I try to live my life as a did & can one ,not could one or should one.God knows I spend a lot of my time face down in the mud ,but I keep trying.Did I screw up bet your bottom dollar , but I haven't got the time nor inclination to beat myself up over this it takes to much energy and no matter what I can't change it. You learned a lousy damned lesson and the wisdom of that lesson is being passed on to other women. Kinda makes you a knight in tarnished armor or a vanquishing Lady with dirty slippers. And you know what I have never seen a hero up close who didn't have dirty slippers or tarnished armor it's how you get wisdom and wisdom is something precious to pass on .Quit beating yourself up Girl and scream it from the roof top .

does it really matter now, what we did, or didnt do, that we are now where we are? I had a gyn appointment at the end of October 2008. It was at 8am, and I was to tired to go. Then my ob/gyn was on vacation, then I was on vacation. I actually went December 8,2008, and was sent to the hospital right away. I know, had I gone 6 weeks earlier, it would have not been as bad as it was now, but, there is no point in thinking of it. It is how it is. All the statistics did not work for me, because I do not fit the profile. We have to look forward, to get well. I will make sure my daughter will get checked regularly. Most doctors seem to think I was too young with 44, but I read so many stories of young women in their twenties, that I will make sure, my daughter will get the best checkups possible. So please, everyone, you dont know, if you had done this or that, if that would have changed anything, look forward, not back.
thinking of everyone,
Manuela

I have heard of HRT being linked with breast cancer but not ovarian. When I asked my oncologist she said they don't know the cause...she said even nuns get it. I worried about my husband's infidelity and if it could be like the HPV virus and cervical cancer. But she said not.

I had a tubal ligation in 1985 and was diagnosed with
OC Stage IIIc in 2008....I breast fed for a short period
of time.

But I was on HRT for about a year and being particularly
sensitive I feel this might have something to do with my
OC. I am curious how others feel about this.

Hi MomA, Mom had a TL after having 5 children and breast feeding. She actually feels that having that done actually increased her chances and eventually gave her stage IIIC ovca. Please take my survey, this along with many other questions that she and I came up with are on there. We thought about things that most drs wouldn't even consider, check it out. These are the kind of things that can make a difference for all of us.

Rose2, I agree totally. What is is for us and we must continue to pray for breakthroughs for early diagnosis, a cure and treatments that can put us in long remissions.

I had a tubal in 1978 and a hysterectomy in 1980/ leaving the left ovary. OVC dx in November of 2006. I also took fertility pills in the early 1970's and was told that could add to chances of getting OVC. Actually, they still do not know what causes it. Praying that God will lead the medical field find some answers for the ladies that still have not been dx with ovc and for all of us. (( HUGS))

Tubal ligation in 1981.
OVCA in 2006.
No births, which could have canceled out my tubal "benefits."

Manuelaingermany, you should ask to have genetic testing for the BRCA 1 and 2 gene. If you have that, then your daughter has a 50% chance of having the gene but you won't know until she is tested also. If the BRCA genes are not a factor, she is still at an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer but not nearly at the probability as if she has the BRCA gene. My insurance paid for it. Many do. I did not have the gene but have told my girls to be vigilant about getting exams and let their gynecologists know the history so they will be more cautious about symptoms and doing proper testing. And we must hope and pray that by the time our girls get up there, there will be better testing for early diagnosis, a cure and/or treatments that prolong life much longer than they do now.

I am 44, slim, I eat very little meat and fat, had my daughter young (with 22), breastfead, and had my tubes tied when I was around 30. Every one of those things should have saved me from this, but I was diagnosed December 9.2008, So I am very new at this. Will have my first chemo next week. So dont think, that having your tubes tied would have kept you from getting this cancer. I am so worried now for my young daughter.

I have always heard that statistics can be very deceiving. I think the truth is they don't really know what causes this cancer. Obviously tubals are not a protection as so many of the ladies have had them. I would be more inclined to go with the overweight and lack of exercise.

statistics are done on only a certain amount of people for a certain amount of time. that is why the are not reliable but used like a rough graph. my dr told me that these statistic are based on 10 yrs. so it is kind of obsolete. but something is needed as a guide and for now this is the best they can do. everyone is different as is how this disease affects each of us differently. makes me think that if 100% of all the people responsible for these statistics had the same situation as myself, then these particular numbers would be entirely opposite of what they are!

To kla.........
Yes, hypothroid for many years. Can't even remember how many.
I am 49 now. Diagnosed OC at 48.
Jeanie

I am with you kla. Part of me wants to know since I worry about my girls and what they can do to lessen their odds. And for others, too. Your brother is right...there is no point in beating ourselves up for the past, ie. my lack of exercise and overweight, because there is nothing I can do about that now. I have cancer. I can try and prevent it by keeping my weight down and exercising but the past is behind us now.

Moms I think what you are seeing is we all want an answer as to why we are the chosen few.My brother gave me a lecture recently on being negative. Trying to beat myself up on the past.He picked the wrong subject and needed to hear what I had to say.I have 3 daughters , four granddaughters,6 nieces and 4 grandnieces and one great grand daughter. How I got it is not the factor what they can find out now may save them from this disease & by Gods little green apples I will pick up everyone I can and look for the worm holes to see if I can help find an answer.
If you didn't hear it I just gave a raspberry to all those who say just forget it.
Which brings up a question. I was diagnosed with goiters about a year before I was actually diagnosed with ovca. No one seemed to concerned and life went on. They actually shrank with chemo. Did any of you have thyroid disease before?

It seems like it is the opposite....more women who have tubals get ovarian cancer from our mini survey. I think they really don't know what causes it.

Tubal ligation in 1987 after 3 pregnancies and 4 live births
pill for 10 years
no HRT
105 lbs 5'5"
menopause 49
no family history / Jewish but BRCA1&2 negative
OVCA 3C 03/08
