I have been on this website almost everyday the last couple of months looking for information and inspiration on behalf of my mom. This site has helped me support my mom (and dad) and to be very active at each of her Dr's appointments.
Yesterday we got very good news that her latest CT scan showed very very minimal cancer left.
She was originally diagnosed with stage 3 cancer April 2002 at the age of 68. She had successful optimal debulking surgery at Sloan Kettering followed by 6 Taxol/Carbo and then 2 months later 5 IP treatments which were still in the trial stage.
Mom remained clean for close to 7 years. Her CA-125 remained very low but a CT scan was done in Feb2009 showing the cancer had returned in 2 places. Mom had 6 initial Taxol/Carbo treatments and then another 3 treatments. She was lucky in that she was able to handle the chemo treatments pretty well...never had to miss a treatment due to poor blood levels.
I think it is also important to recognize the care givers for cancer patients and in our case my Dad has been amazing dealing with all the side effects on a daily basis.
I guess the reason I am writing today is to thank everyone on this site...I found it very empowering and actually enabled me to be so much better informed with the Dr's. When we found out yesterday that no additional treatments are recommended we were also told that the disease can come back; however no one can tell you when or if. I mentioned this site to the Dr and if there was a maintenance program my mom should be on. Because of this site and my question they are putting my mom on hormones...not sure what they are yet because they are sending us the prescription.
We have been totally happy with all the doctors and their care at Sloan Kettering in NYC and on LI and would highly recommend them.
Thanks for letting me share my story. We are full of hope. My prayers are for all of you battling this disease.

Good luck to your mom. I wish her a long time in remission.

Sloan Kettering, as you know, is one of the top cancer centers in the world, so I am sure your mother is getting the best care possible. I hope things go well.

Your experience with this site resulting in advocating for your mother is wonderful. I'm also Stage III-C and realize this is a chronic disease. We have our remissions and recurrences. I'm sure you realize your mother's 7 year remission is not the norm; apparently she positively responded to her treatments. Excellent that you bring information forward that may help her thrive.

Good job!!

I am so glad that we could be helpful for you. It looks like your mom is in good hands with you and her MSK team. Best wishes for a long remission.

Thanks for your warm thoughts and wishes. My mom just received a prescription from her doctor for Arimidex. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Tks
