BMT information:
Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) = type of stem cell transplant in which the stem cells are obtained from the bone marrow. Bone marrow transplant can be either a peripheral blood or bone marrow stem cell transplant.
Apheresis = process where blood is taken from a donor, a blood component is separated out, and the remaining blood components are returned to the donor. For a peripheral blood stem cell collection, the white blood cell component, which contains the stem cells, is separated out.
Autologous Stem Cell Transplant: transplant in which the stem cells are taken from the patient, the cells are frozen, and later infused into the patient.
Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant = transplant in which the stem cells come from a specially matched donor (related family member, unrelated person or cord blood).

Thank you! Just this morning I was searching for the meaning of debulking. Won't tell you what I thought it meant :).

T2Y

CINV= Chemo induced nausea and vomiting
CIPN= Chemo induced peripheral neuropathy

Thanks Jenaali-- I forgot those.

Aha! And let's not forget "chemo brain." It's real, folks. Don't need any fancy, expensive study to prove it.

I'm not a newby, but your list contained a lot of terms I wasn't familiar with. Thanks, I'm going to print it out to have at hand.

Emily

many thanks Shamrock. What does GI mean? I'm sure it's dead simple but I have noticed it a few times recently and wondered!!

Someone wrote that he was so pleased becos his new tumour was B9. Everyone was really pleased but i just didn't get it. In case there is anyone as slow as me ,it means benign !!!!!!!!

Are you coming to stay with me in october ?

JanP in GB

Thank you..... This helps.

God Bless :0)

JanP,
Gi refers to GastroIntestinal in medical terms.
The B9 (benign) is a good one --I only wish it for all of us.

WOW thnks now i feel informed can't tell you how stupid i felt not knowing what you all were talking about most of the time. thank you again.

Excellent. Clinical trials might be of interest regarding Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 trials and what each phase refers to.

This list should be included in the FAQ's of the Inspire site.

Laurel

Laurel,
Good idea. I will start to put something together about clinical trials.

Great idea!

Metastasis can be any additional cancer, not just the dire sites. I was stage 2 because one of the 20-30 biopsies showed microscopic metastasis near my bladder. When the gyn/onc told me, he said, "You had a metastasis on your bladder."

I was terrified and said, "You mean I have bladder cancer, too?"

"No, no," he quickly reassured me. "We describe additional cancer by the organ it's near. Yours was on the bladder wall, not in it."

Have needed something like this!!! Thanks for all of ya'lls' time and input. Now I can understand better what my friend is going through.

And these may be of help:

Biomarkers: Genes, proteins, and other biologic molecules that predict the behavior of cancer; they are sometimes called markers

Cell: The structural and functional unit of any living thing. A group of cells (such as muscle cells) make up tissue, and tissues make up organs (such as the heart). All cells contain the genes needed to function, including those that produce future generations of cells.

DNA: Deoxyribonucleic acid, the chemical that makes up a gene

Functional profiling: The technique to measure overall data on cell-death, rather than the status of the individual gene/protein pathways.

Gene: A basic functional and physical unit of heredity that is passed on from parent to child

Gene profiling: The technique to identify genes that are turned on or off in a specific tumor to help plan the best treatment for a patient and/or predict response to treatment

Genetics: The study of how genes are passed from parent to child

Inherited: A characteristic, such as eye color, that is genetically received from one's parents

Personalized medicine: The use of information about an individual person and an individual cancer to provide specific strategies to find, treat, and prevent cancer

Protein: A chemical compound that is necessary for the function of any living thing

Targeted therapy: A treatment designed to block a specific gene or protein that has a critical role in the survival, growth, invasion, or metastasis of a specific cancer cell

Amazing!! Great Job!! You guys are awesome!! Thanks!
