Switching meds...or not? How long do you wait???

So things are kind of rough with Topetecan. My mom has never been so immobile cn hardly walk from the lathargy...After the first month of Topetecan the marker has gone up 100 notches to 450 or so. In the mean time now there is water in the lungs and all kinds of difficulty with the bowels. They said they will up the dose for the next month to see if it has some effect but where do we go from here?? After Taxol and Carboplatin resistance and no luck with Doxil what's left? Any new trials out there?? Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

Gemzar is a common one to try......many of us are/have been on it.
How about Avastin? Many of us have had no problem with the insurance approval, and the drug company has a compassionate care program to help pay for it if needed. Medicare approves it in some states too.

Thanks for your note! I will ask the doctor about those...

There are many other options out there, but only her doctor can analyze her particular circumstances and decide which would be worth trying and when. Yes, it is often trial and error, and hopefully we all find one that works.

I've had all the ones you mentioned and am now on Avastin and Cytoxan. FYI, you have to be a good candidate for Avastin because of possible side effects, some serious. One common issue is that it raises your blood pressure, so if hers is high, she might not get it. Mine is normallly extremely low and I am now on BP meds. Also, whether your insurance will pay for it is another issue. Avastin is VERY expensive because it is still considered experimental for ovca, even though they use it for other cancers.

You should both have a good talk with her doctor and find out what the options are. Sending good wishes to both of you.

Thanks Favorite Aunt that is good advice. I left her Dr. a msg asking all those questions. Glad Avastin is working for you!
