Survivors Teaching Students

0 Recommendations

Hi,
I am in the Boston area. Survivors Teaching Students are a group of women who go to medical schools to tell third year medical students their stories so that when they are out in practice, they might remember us when patients show up with our symptoms or lack of symptoms. We are currently looking for women who are willing to be trained to tell their stories. It is usually every three months for one hour during the day, probably in the afternoon. We will be going to Tufts Medical School on June 11. Please let me know if there are women out there who would like to help us.
Thanks.

I'm involved with STS in the Miami area. Right now we are just speaking to nursing and nurse practitioner students but would love to get in to the medical schools and the physician assistant schools. So far, the program has been extremely well received.

I have been asked by a colleague to share my story to students in a Physician Assistant Program in Boston. I am a medical professional as well, so I have might have a unique perspective. I am sure you have learned valuable lessons in terms of the best approach to telling "our story. "Do you have any guidelines that you would could share?
Thank you.

I also participate in this program, STS. We speak to med students at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. It is a wonderful program. I understand they are working on doing the same in nursing schools and look forward to that. I believe that PA training programs should also be included.

You could get in touch with Lindsey Boyle and ask how to approach the Maine Medical Center to see if they will let you in.

I too, would love to be involved in a program like this--I live in the Portland, Me. area and from the info I've found there is no program in this area. If anyone hears of one, please let me know.

Please get in touch with Lindsey Boyle from the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. Her email address is just below your email. She can help you set up a group or tell you if there is one already set up there.

Hi! I would love to participate in Survivors Teaching Students, I'm in my 6th year fighting OVCA. I live in East Tennessee, I'm close to Vanderbilt, Emory and many other Medical Schools. Please let me know what I can do, I really do want to this and feel very strongly about it. Thanks, Barbarasue

Lindsey, thanks for answering and telling everyone you are available. Now that I have finally done it and am a facilitator, I love doing it. I think everyone would like doing it also.

Hi everyone!

Thank you for your interest in our Survivors Teaching Students program, and thank you Zircons for helping us reach more survivors.

Please feel free to contact me, Lindsey Boyle, at lboyle@ovariancancer.org for more information about the program and its specific locations!

I also have a story to tell. I would love to help.

I am part of this program in the St. Louis area. I get as much or more out of it as do the students. To be able to take a difficult negative situation (battling OC) and use it to do so much good is an exhilerating feeling.
I highly recommend this program to any area with teaching hospitals. It puts a face and a human side to the disease.

I'm a facilitator for the Miami-Dade area in Florida. We've been going to nursing schools and the positive response has been overwhelming. Anyone in this area who would like to join us, please contact me.

As far as I can see from my facilitator's handbook, there is not group in Illinois. There are medical schools there. Get in touch with Lindsey Boyle about starting a group there. She will tell you the procedure or try www.ovariancancer.org/STS

Hi all you strong women! We have a group in Dayton, OH, that talks with med students at Wright State Boonshoft School of Medicine as well as nursing students at some of the hospitals. Remember that your first line of contact is usualy with the nurse who can bring a lot of issues to the forefront for the Docs. I can't sing the praises of the program too loud! If you are in my area and would like to participate please call - 937-223-4117 x310 or 1-888-221-4004 x310. You can also contact our local group at that number if you would like to become involved in educating the local public or talking with local survivors.

I would really like a chance to share myn story with medical students. Do you know any organizations looking for people to do this in the chicago, illinois area? I am really looking for a way to give back to the community.

I'd like to try and participate with you. Shoot me a Friend message with details. Perhaps I can join in one of the next ones.

From the list I have for facilitators, there appears to be groups at Drexel Univ College of Medicine, Jefferson Medical College and Univ of PA School of Medicine. Contact Lindsey Boyle at OCNA. I gave her email address in an earlier email.
