StandUp2Cancer Day is September 5

3 Recommendations

To all my friends here~

Many of us have commented on the need for greater awareness about Ovarian Cancer. Well, the Entertainment Industry Foundation is funding programs to raise awareness. They fund the Survivors Teaching Students program where OVCA survivors educate medical students about the problems with diagnosing OVCA by telling their personal stories.

EIF is also creating various public service announcements about cancer and they are behind the September 5 Stand Up to Cancer program which is being supported by the major TV networks and various media and entertainment personalities. Go to

Thank you for the reminder. I sent this to a lot of people. To remind them of it. Let's pray that progress is made in the OVC area!!

Dear Rose2,
I just read your profile! Wow, you and I were diagnosed at the same time (November 2006), same stage, IIIC and now we're having same kinds of new "issues", i.e. enlarged periaortic nodes. Please let me know how you're doing and what kind of treatment you're receiving or considering.

I had shoulder surgery the end of April (due to damage from chemo) so I was just released from the Orthopedic surgeon. I made an appoitment with the oncologist today. Can't get in until the first part of September , the 5th 6th. I do not have a calander here.
They could not do any treatment for 4 months after surgery. Now that timeis up!! ;)
I am still having pain on my left side and it radiates in to my back lower and mid back. And sometimes up under my ribs. But I have to wait and see. I had my CA 125 taken to day when I took my husband to the Onclogist. Maybe my Dr will call me with the results before the appointment. Once he sees me, he wants to order with pet or cat scan to see how the lymph nodes etc is doing. What is happening with you?

You need to call the doctor today to get your CA125 results. You should be able to get the results the next day.

Where is this day being observed on Sept 5? I never heard of it. No publicity in the Boston area. What are they doing in observance of the day?

Tune in September 5th at 8pm on ABC, NBC and CBS!

I've heard this event advertised during the "Today Show" on NBC and my family and I are planning on watching it.

Please encourage all your family and friends to watch at least some of it. The more we can all become more educated on any type of cancer, the better.

Normally I am skeptical of all things Hollywood, however, this sounds like a good thing. I would want to know where the funds go though---100% should be allocated to whatever organization is promoting it. Who is it--the ACS? Are the stars doing this for free? Not trying to be a downer, just want people to be careful and spend money where it'll do the most good.....

Maybe the website concerning the event, will hold some answers. It is http://www.standup2cancer.org

The web site does hold a lot of information. And here's some more....I attended the annual Ovarian Cancer National Alliance conference in Washington, D.C. in July and heard a senior VP from the Entertainment Industry Foundation talk about what EIF is doing to fund programs for and about ovarian cancer.

StandUp2Cancer is one of the programs they support. I think the most important take away message for all of us in this is that on September 5 there will be a nationwide awareness campaign launched to advocate for change at all levels in how we as a society deal with cancer--whether it be research, awareness, corporate and societal policy.

We need to be heard! So, here's an idea: call your local community newspaper today and tell them about September 5 which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day, as well as the launch of StandUp2Cancer. And, tell them that President Bush just this week has signed a proclamation declaring September National Ovarian Cancer (awareness) month. Then, if you feel up to it, ask the newspaper to interview you so you can tell your story in your community. This is always a powerful way to make people aware of how something as hideous as ovarian cancer affects not just you and your family, but your friends, your workplace, your church and your community. And get out the word about the early warning symptons and how important it is for women to be their own health advocates and insist that doctors get to the bottom of "vague" symptons like fullness, bloating, weight gain around the stomach, dull aches in back and pelvis etc. that don't go away.
Make sure you talk about the fact that ovarian cancer is not always on the radar screen of the health care providers who we rely upon for an accurate diagnosis. Something we aim to change!!

So call your local newspaper editor today and Stand UP! Make your voice heard in September!!!

Imagine the kind of grassroots awareness WE can start TODAY if each one of us actually picks up the phone and calls a newspaper editor, or the local radio station or local TV station and says "interview me about this hideous disease so that we might save some other women in our community from having to go through what I'm living with each day."

P.S. As a publisher of community newspapers I can tell you with confidence that editors always are on the lookout for human interest stories that underscore a social issue. And awareness about ovarian cancer is a big social issue.

Great suggestion!

Zircons: Katie Couric has been doing commercials in the Boston area for the last month and mentioning it on her news broadcast. There is a TV program that night as well, but we are the face and voices of cancer and it is up to us to spread the word. Best Wishes!
