Rise in ca 125 after one round of Avastin

0 Recommendations

I am currently being treated for my second recurrence. I started out taking carbo and gemzar but had a reaction to the carbo and so we switched to avastin and gemzar. My ca 125 before the first round of avastin was 64, had been going down now it has gone up to 78.7. Is this normal with Avastin, will it go back down after another round? I also have a hernia from my incesion and wonder if that is the cause. Just wanted to know if anyone had any experience with this. I am stage 3c. Thanks.

Dear Linda

Altough I am on different drugs (Caelyc, carboplatin), for my first reccurence, I had the same experience rise in CA 125 from 505 to 640 between first and second treatment. My doc said it is because CA125 is released from dying cancer cells.
I`v also experienced that CA 125 values may not drop steadily, but bump around a little bit on its way down where I hope it will settle.
Wish you a very effective therapy
Inno

Hi Inno,

Thanks for the reply. I am hoping that is the case. This is just the first time that it has gone up during chemo. I wish you luck with the treatment you are on. I am hoping that someday soon they will find the cure for all of us.

I'm waiting and wondering too. I'm on Avastin and Cytoxan (daily pill) and just had my 3rd treatment of Avastin the other day. No blood work done yet, so I'm extremely curious to see what is going on. I think the response you get also depends on the type of chemo and how that particular chemo works fighting the cells. Let's hope our numbers go down!

My wife's CA-125 stayed at 15 for 2 years after six rounds of carbo/taxol. Then it started doubling. When it got over 150, she repeated carbo/taxol and it came back down, but started rising in only six months.
When it was at 135 she started a Clinical Trial of Avastin. After 1st treatment it dropped to 60 then after 2nd treatment it went up to 73, not a big increase. After 3rd treatment it went to 74. Dr. is not relying on CA125 readings, but concentrating on CT scans. She is approaching 6 years, watching what she eats and doing tons of exercise, meditation, yoga, crafts, and doing a lot of laughing.

Hang in there.

Tomd

Hi FavoriteAunt,

I hope you get great results with Avastin and that your numbers are down. I am hoping that after the second round that mine is down now.

Hi Tomd,
That is great news about your wife, thanks for sharing. I hope she continues to do good.

i have had 5 treatment of avastin-after i finished my fourth, completing the second cycle, my ca125 went down to 71.9 from 137, almost in half, and my ascites is in check....no drainings since sept 1, and no plans to. good luck, great drug-exept for causing me high blood pressure, which i swear is worse than cancer-i am now on 3 drugs for high blood pressure, but doc said it takes a while to get blood pressure under control, a month for each drug-i have only been getting treated for almost 4 weeks, since the start of the first drug, so just another hurdle. god bless. sherry
