Radiation for OC?

0 Recommendations

I'm wondering if anyone has had radiation for ovarian cancer and if so what were the circumstances. The reason I'm asking is because my latest CT scan shows a small recurrence in the lower left groin area. Since it is localized I'm wondering if radiation can be done. Perhaps I'm way off base! I'll be doing some research on the subject but would like to hear others experiences. Blessings to you all. Thank you!

I had radiation for my recurrence and it did kill the tumors. After the radiation I had a PET scan and more tumors had popped up so I had radiation again. I go back next month for a scan to see how it worked. I had a blood test last week and my CA125 number was the lowest it has ever been since I was first diagnosed in May of 2008 so I have great hopes that the radiation worked and no more tumors please. The side effects weren't bad at all, nothing compared to chemo. Just a little tired. I definitely recommend it.

Blessings, Diana

I'm doing radiation right now. I've already had 25 external treatments and will be starting internal treatments on Monday. Mine was confined only to the top of the vagina. One small spot. It's not that bad. I got tired and a little nauseated. Not as bad as chemo though. (which I will have later).

Lemona----I am doing chemo now, with radiation to follow. I have a cancerous lymph node in my neck that they will zap with the radiation. They tell me that I will just be tired.

Wow, never thought of radiation. I did have that when I had DCIS. I know once you have radiation you can't have it in the same place again. So when my breast cancer returned, I had to have mastectomy.
I've had several different chemos for the ovarian CA and two recurrences. Went straight to chemo. Doc never even mentioned radiation. I thought that radiation would make a tumor smaller so that either surgery or chemo would be effective. I'll have to check with my doc to see if my recurrences, which tend to be small in in the peritoneum would respond to radiation. Thanks.

Hey girls, my friend just finished out her round of external radiation (along with getting IV taxol treatments) she always feels as if she has a bladder infection and hasn't had a solid bowel movement since September. She has been feeling terribly and really tired. Any suggestions??

Thanks,
Kathy

I can't share personally, but recently talked with Jan Kirsch, author of "Winter Body, Summer Soul" a memoir about her experiences dealing with Ovarian Cancer. She has had a lot of radiation as part of her treatment. She spoke at our Gilda's Club Support group, and is 9-years out from diagnosis. She is currently in remission after treatment for her third recurrence. The first two recurrences and treatments are covered in the book.

I'm still not clear as to when radiation is used, and know there are different types of radiation therapy (she has had three different types.) I would be interested in anything you discover. It obviously has worked well for her since her first recurrence happened after only a year's remission.

I was treated with radiation (25) external treatments and 6 chemo treatments after my diagnosis of carcinosarcoma of the ovary in May 2008 ending Dec 2008. My cancer was extremely aggressive and so they chose an aggressive treatment.v My Ca 125 has always been normal so it's not helpful. I feel completely normal and my hair has grown back and hoping that it all worked.

I had radiation for my ovca. However, I had a granulosa tumor and it responds a little differently to treatment. I did not have tumors present at the time. I had just had my second surgery and three months of chemo. They waited for three weeks then administered six weeks for radiation. Then we had to wait for five weeks before my last three months of chemo. They were hoping that this would keep the cancer from coming back so soon since I had my first recurrence 9 months after original diagnosis.

I am thinking that it must depend on the type of cancer and the location. My gyn/onc has told me I am not a candidate for radiation.

I also had carcinosarcoma in 2005 and was not treated with radiation, only taxol and carbo. However, when I changed my gyn oncologist one year after treatment, first question she asked was, "Did anyone consider radiation at the time of your diagnosis?" It made me feel that it should have been considered in my case. That said, so far so good!
