I was diagnosed with low grade serous carcinoma in April of this year. They tried surgery to remove the tumor, or at least as much as they could, but found they could not remove anything So they started me on chemotherapy. The chemo drugs seem to be fairly common among us, Taxol/Carbo, and many of you are on a third drug, but I have not seen anyone else on the third drug I am on - Femara. This drug is common for breast cancer, which I do not have. The doctor explained it is a hormone, and she believes this type of cancer responds more to hormones than chemo. She is well respected at the hospital where I receive treatment, MD Anderson in Houston, (I also work there, as an admin assistant to radiologists, and the docs I support say she is the best.)
Has anyone else taken Femara too? Thanks!

I am going to MD Anderson tomorrow for a second opinion and possible participation in a clinical study. I am meeting with Dr. Gershenson. I also have low grade serous carcinoma and have read of the work Dr. G has done on this type of cancer. I will let you know what he says when I get back. I will also ask him about Femara. I was on Femara at first because I was originally diagnosed with breast cancer. I had no tumors to tell where it was for sure. It knocked my CA125 way down, but then started to creep up again, so I was re-diagnosed with OvCa and switched to Taxol/Carbo and now also Avastin, which is working.
So: the Femara worked even not on breast cancer at least on some things, and has the wonderful advantage of having no side effects (at least for me) and no hair loss! Hormone suppressors are apparently quite effective--I think they were hoping it would no matter exactly what kind of ca I had
I hope that makes sense--blame it on my ever-changing diagnosis.

Thanks for your responses! Karen, I am participating in Dr. G's study, one of three that I am participating in. He is supposed to be one of the best, but I have not met him. 10 years ago, I had a total abdominal hysterectomy, and had tumors on my ovaries, both benign, but one of them was also a low malignant potential. They believe cells were left behind that have grown into this that I have now. That was also a requirement for one of the studies, hving the low malignant potential, can't remember which, just doing my part to help any future ovca diagnosis.

I had breast cancer 13 years ago and was put on femara after tamoxifin. When I developed ovarian cancer and after surgery and put on chemo the ong discontinued femara because he said taxol carbo addressed the issue. After a year and my cancer not put in remission I am now on femara and doxil. I cannot tell you how I am doing because I have only been on the new regiment for 2 months
