ABC news tonight had a story on PARP inhibitors, and their effectiveness against aggressive breast AND ovarian cancers. And the woman they interviewed has OC, not BC. Yay.....finally OC!

Is it only available for aggressive and BRCA ovarian cancers? I have serous papillary epithelial type and don't know the grade or differentiation. Am very interested in learning more about some of the new things in case they prove to be effective down the road. Thanks, for sharing what you have learned.
Yes, finally ovca is mentioned.
They also said it was good for prostate cancer, so it might get more attention if several cancers are responding.

Yeah, MomAnderson aske my question-Can it be used for people who don't have the BRCA gene?
I'm considering genetic testing but haven't done it yet. It seems unlikely that I'd have that gene, because no one in my family has had OVCA and only one grandmother had breast cancer and it wasn't too severe...
I had heard from my oncologist, that "they" are exploring PARP in non-BRCA cases. Sorry that I don't know any more.

to the best of my knowledge the PARP inhibitors are only effective on ovarian, breast and prostate cancers that are BRCA 1 or 2 related...that is to say the person involved would have to be BRCA 1 or 2 positive...the PARP inhibitors, if I am correct, use a protein to help repair damaged DNA...
Any others have info on this???heard about it a while back at the FORCE conference in Tampa...
If a genetic condition leads to cancer there is new hope in a class of drugs called PARP inhibitors.
Poly (ADP-Ribose) Polymerase (PARP) is a protein cells use to repair genetic injuries naturally. But cancer cells also use this protein to repair their own DNA damage. Inhibiting this action allows chemotherapy and radiation to do its job against cancers resulting from genetic mutation.
In a study causing much excitement in the cancer-fighting world (CBS called this the “holy grail” of cancer research, thus the French Taunter above) scientists at the Institute of Cancer Research in Sutton, England gave 19 patients with advanced cancers caused by mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes a PARP inhibitor and over half saw their tumors shrink or stop growing.
The drug had no effect on 41 patients whose tumors were not the result of the genetic defect.
i read recently that parps are due to have testing for not BRCA OVCA and they think they will be effective. seems like I read phase II trials coming up. THis cheered me as I had thought they wouldn't work but the article said they think they will.
Avastin is still in trials but Phase 3 - my doctor says should be approved soon. I'm very interested in PARP since I have both BRAC genes.
I thought this was very exciting. If they can find a drug to cure one type of cancer then the others cannot be far behind. I said a woohoo and almost starting crying just thinking of how many lives can be saved.
