Ovarian Cancer... Bowl Obstruction

0 Recommendations

Hello, My mom has ovarian cancer and I am here hoping that I might be able to obtain advice or insight. To make a long story short, she is an 80 woman with an afib heart condition which complicates things even more. She was through chemo, then a hysterectomy operation and then two more cycles of chemo. The cancer is now in her small intestines which is causing a bowl obstruction. She cannot eat and vomits because she is unable to digest and is now on intravenous for her nourishment and medicines. Because of this she is too weak to receive chemo to battle the cancer. So were at a catch 22 situation. She is still as alert as she's always been and same for her mental faculties The doctors now want to transfer her to an end of life facility. I would be eternally grateful if anyone would share any sort of experience or guidance.... Thank you

I'm sorry for your mother and your family. This is difficult. I will have to make this kind of decision in the future, having recurrent ovarian cancer.
If I where you, I would do my best to find out gently what your mother thinks and follow her wishes. She will know best, what she can take and how much she wants to go through to live longer. She should not feel guilty about any decision in either direction. My best wishes, Edith

I agree find out what Mom wants first. She is 80 and not a lot get this far.Prolonging her life at this age to see her suffer may not be her wish. She may want the last days to be as joyful as possibel not filled with chemo and dr apptmnts. A longer life but spending it
with drs.I don't want to seem insensitive here but really what is living if you are in constant pain.I know i will be facing this situation soon and know what I would want. All the best to you and her as you face this.Ifd she has a strong faith then she knows where she is headed and that isn't so bad either. In my books a WIN -WIN-HERE WITH FAMILY OR HOME WITH JESUS. I will keep you both in my prayers.

we just faced a similar situation with mom. She died a couple of days ago. She was diagnosed in March 09 but her heart prevented surgery or even a tissue diagnosis.

We chose hospice -- it was not easy but it seems that surgery etc was not a viable option.

it is an awful disease!
